DVD-ROM dying?

I jus recently started having this problem. My DVD-ROM will read CDs, and DVD but will skip around a lot, or when it plays correctly, it won't play the 3rd track, or chapter on DVD's. Whats going on here? Keep in mind the thing is about 3 years old, do they just evetully wear out, or should I try popping it open and cleaning or, ot just blow some air-duster in there?

This is kind of a problem as the only other optical drive I have is a crappy CD-RW, and all the games I have with SafeDisc will not, no matter how hard I try read from the CD-RW. So if there is a way I can either get that DVD-ROM working or make an imagine file to run off the HD I'd appreciate any help.
