Trying to get the dvd drive to work on my mom's dumpy Asus desktop. Evidently the DVD drive just up and quit working one day. Apprently the driver is not responding properly. The drive will open and close but windows cannot recognize the drive is there. I've tried everything I know how to do and come up with bubkis.

The computer is an Asus Essentio Series
Pentium Dual Core
P5-series mainboard
Running Windows 7 Home Premium (x64)

Here is a screen shot of the error code (39) the device manager gives me:

Have you tried searching for and reinstalling the firmware for the drive? (Many firmware packages have self-executing installers/updaters.)

Tried updating the firmware. But the firmware utility cannot find the drive.

Edit: I updated the BIOS just in case. Same issue is present. The BIOS recognizes the drive, but Windows does not.
