Looking for a SATA dvd-dl burner drive. Any suggestions? I'm looking for something short like my lite-on, but havn't found anything so far.

Look into a Plextor drive. Very reliable drives and I believe they have one of their 716 models in SATA.

i couldn't find my MSI motherboard on their compatability list (RS480M2-IL)

Plextor is the only SATA DVD burner. It is short, like the Lite-On. Your board is probably too new. Only way to know is to try it and see.

Personally, I would just keep your Lite-On, because the SATA version is a ripoff. Problems with the technology and twice the price for a thinner cord?? Way not worth it. They will eventually come down in prices and the problems will go away, once more manufacturers start making them.

thanks for the info, i guess i'll file it in the long term upgrades list.

Plextor's SATA burner is just the IDE burner with a bridge on it, hidden by the casing. There is someone in the Optical Drives forum that took their's apart.

I'd suggest just getting an IDE DVD-R drive at the moment. They're cheaper, compatible with more motherboards, and you will have a MUCH larger selection to choose from.

correct....plextors sata drive is not short

its quite long infact. and it is a converter.

the slot loading plextor is hot, bit pricey, but its short and slick.

I would stick with the IDE versions also, for the time being. I looked at the plextor, and it is massive compared to the Lite-on that I bought.
