I have 2 DVD drives that worked flawlessly till someone shut off the comp without turning it off properly. Now, both my DVD drives only recognize CDs. They just hang and eventually say they do not recognize a DVD.

I have tried updating firmware, uninstalling device, uninstalling drivers.

What can this be?

You can try them in another computer as well, but it sounds like both drives may be dead and/or dying. I had a LiteOn burner that did the very same thing, and their support team gave me some suggestions. Nothing worked, and I ended up throwing it out because it couldn't be fixed.

By the way, this is the OS subform. There's a General hardware section, and an optical drive section as well.

Hmm... both at the very same time? One is on SATA, one IDE. This is basically a 1 month old computer.

The only thing I can think of is the reboot/turn off somehow fried them, but odd that CDs still work.

It would seem it is more of a software issue don't you think?
