Im building a new Gamming PC, and ive notice that most of the motherboards ive been looking at come with SATA and SATA II.. Ive been looking, but i cant seem to find any SATA II HHD. Are there any? thanks
 
Nope, not yet, but sata will run on sata II as well as the reverse is true.
 
All things being equal SATA has a slight speed advantage. The really big things start happening when you move to something like a Raptor. Once I switched to a Raptor as my main drive I was stuck never being able to go back, that’s the only down side. ;)

Seagate's site lists the all the 'Cudas as being just 1.5gbps SATA, but it would be my understanding that anything with NCQ support is SATA-II, as that is a feature that is part of the SATA-II specification.

Raptors used to be IDE. I havent seen the IDE raptor beat the SATA raptor.
 
Did they? I thought they were just a bridged chipset so that WD could get a 10k sata drive out before everyone else did. I've never seen a 10k PATA drive for sale anywhere. Got a link?
 
its been a while since i read up on the PATA raptors. Ill be back in a bit with a link hopefully.
 
no such luck i coulda been wrong. but i still swear i remember about how originally there were pata raptors, then they made the sata raptors
 
All raptors are based of a pata chipset. They use a pata-sata bridge. That's most likely what you read on. They are not a native sata chipset which limits some of their functionality.
 
There are some 7200.7s in the wild with SATA-II (marketed as NCQ ready drives). Remember that all Seagate SATA Drives are native SATA and do not employ a bridge chip on a PATA drive. Most of the 7200.7's are merely SATA-I, but all of the 7200.8s are SATA-II

Hitachi has an 80GB SATA-II drive (T7K80), and T7K250 and 7K500 are coming as well on SATA-II.

Maxtor has MaxLineIII/DiamondMax10 as their entry in the SATA-II segment.

Samsung has announced 200 and 250GB SpinPoints, coming soon with native SATA-II.

WD, to my knowledge, has no currently shipping SATA-II drives, and no firm plans for them any time soon.

That covers all of the makers. I am not saying this list is canonical, but most likely any other SATA drive out there is a bridged PATA. Also, I am not aware of any RAptors shipping as PATA drives, although it would be ridiculously easy for WD to do, as they are PATA drives with a bridge chip. That makes two makers solidly onboard SATA-II, and two more coming to the party. I don't know when WD is going to get on board. I hope they do soon.

You can always drop in an *expensive* SATA card that supports NCQ. AFAIK they're all >$200, however
