Dual Screen Laptop Question

I have an IBM Thinkpad T-40, and was looking for a program that woul allow me to have two screens on the notebook. Basically where the screen is split in half. Does anyone know if there is a program that can do this, or is it only a video card option?
 
There used to be an XP Powertoy that would split the screen into 4. You could see if that will do 2.
 
do virtual desktops have anything to do with what's being inquired about/mentioned? i recall there is a virtual desktop power toy

what exactly do you mean by 'split' the screen in half?
 
what I meant was to be able to have the physical screen be split into 2 virtual screens, so that I can have a setup almost like a lniux box, where you can switch to different desktops, only with this I want the screen to be split.
