Hey all,

I have seen a few pics of people attaching two fans together and then to the case. Does that help airflow or hamper it?

IIRC,on the HSF,using the push-push config (attach 2 fans together and blow through the HS) will be more effective than the traditional push-pull config.

this is where i do not understand the push / push an push pull config.

Every fan has directional arrows pointing in the direction of airflow.

In a push / pull config i would assume both arrows would be pointing in the same direction with the rad / hs in the middle of the fans... right?

The same thing for push / push but you would have two fans pushing air into the rad / hs right?
 
In both config,the fans always blow in the same direction.The only difference is the position of each fan in relative with the heatsink/rad,as you said.
 
As I recall, the only thing putting two fans together does is increase static pressure, which depending on the situation, may or may not increase airflow. If you have it in a non-restrictive environment (no obstructions, like a case fan), then it does not increase airflow. If you have it in a restrictive environment (behind an air filter, on a heatsink or radiator), it does increase airflow.
 
I would say that the disturbed air is spinning air that is in the direction of the blade spin. To get any kind of benefit from pull/pull or push/push, the fans have to be counter-rotating, as is seen on boats and airplanes. To my knowledge, all computer fans are designed to spin the same way.
 
That pic you linked to above isn't doing it right. He needs either counter rotating fans or an airflow straightener between the fans such as a honeycomb structure (I've seen people do it with a bunch of straws too).
 
Actually, no... putting two "normal" fans together does not increase airflow or air pressure.

Only turbine fans reap any benefit from more air being pushed through them from another source, due to the way they're built/they work.

Example: the stock fans on your GPU are turbine-type fans, or as someone else mentioned, the engines on a plane.
