Dual Display Graphics Card

Ok, I am probably going to sound stupid, as probably every graphics card today does this, but I can't find info about it.

I am looking to build a video editing and web designing computer (no game play) and I want to use an old 15" and 17" monitor at the same time. My goal is to run dual displays each showing a different part of the desktop under Windows XP.

That is about it... I don't need a 5950 card or anything. Something simple is fine. Looking for a price point around $100, but I don't care if it's an old style $50 card as I have a separate game playing computer.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks.

For around $100, maybe an nVidia Ti4200 should be good. Make sure you check out Ultraman software for multi displays.

If you don't play games on this system, something like a Matrox G550 card would work just fine.

Matrox cards have the best image quality and best dual display support, so it sounds just like what you want.

If you do some gaming, low end ATI cards have pretty good 2D too. The R9100/9000/9200 class with dual monitor capabilities should be around your price range.

I bought a 9600SE for a work computer. It works very well and it came with the coupon for Half Life 2 at the time. Well worth it, I think.

I second the Radeon 9000/9100/9200. Just be careful of a handful of things. Don't bother with an SE. Some of these come with cheaper components, and suffer poor 2D image quality. (At least, in my case, I had two identical PowerColor Radeon 9200SE cards, and they both were terrible... smudgy image quality at high resolutions.) In addition make sure you don't get a card with a DVI-I interface. DVI-D can be adapted to VGA, but DVI-I only works as a DVI interface. I've seen a Saphire Radeon 9100 with this problem. Also, keep an eye on the bundle, as the cards don't always come with the DVI to VGA adapter, so you'd have to pick that up seperately.

I suggest a Matrox G400 or G450 AGP... get them on ebay for around 30 bux. Best 2D card for dual monitor you can get if you don't play games
