Hey all I am evaluating some stuff and getting opinions on what to do since I will complete a new build in january.I will be playing games mostly cod5 and using it to browse the web.

What cpu to get with a new mobo for under $300
 
Depends, If you are talking about Call of Duty 5, who knows, it could utilize a Quad really well for all we know. Should wait till it comes out.

If you missed typed and meant Call of Duty 4, then yes, Dual will be fine, i played it when i had a Core 2 Duo E4400(stock 2.0Ghz) and i got good frames.

Now i have a Core 2 Extreme QX6700.:)

Meh, I have a Q9300 and I regret it a little. A little. I would always go the quad route for futureproofing but right now almost nothing is better than a DC for gaming. You might end up waiting forever to upgrade. Oh look, the Nehalems are coming out, better just wait. Oh look, the HD 5 series is coming out, better just wait. Oh look, now X58 is coming out, better just wait. Might end up waiting all your life. :D
 
i have a q6600 played COD4 with a 8800gts g92 on max everything around 70 fps but i think future games gonna utilize quad cores more
 
A high clocking quad is the best long term bet if you have the PSU / heat capacity for it - and the gfx you are gonna be compelled to upgrade to :D
That is unless you regularly upgrade, in which case, the E8400 or higher are phenomenal due to higher attainable clockspeeds.

A 3.6GHz or higher quad will stand the test of time better.
 
I wont be able to upgrade the cpu,video card for about 2-3 years so I need it to last for me.
I will have it in a antec 900 case,I have a antec ea500d psu which has 22amp on each 12v rail.

I will only have the following in the case.The case fans that come stock with the case,the mobo,cpu,ram,1 hard drive,1 dvd drive,1 video card.

That would be true if you always want/need the best technology out, which isnt all of us.

But yes in general a Quad would be better or at least i think so, for now and the future, if you want the best performance now, you can get a dual. So i guess i do somewhat agree with you, i just still think a Quad will still be beneficial as of now and the future.

I have no problems keeping my QX6700 while Core i7 launches(they don't benefit much in games anyways.)
 
Me and many others here would probably fkin' die if we had to live with a system for 3 years, let alone 1.. I never ever ever recommend quads but I feel obligated to, though in 3 years time the crappiness of a C2D and C2Q will probably be equally felt. Q6600 it is, whatever.. Just don't forget to overclock it.
 
I know alot of you guys are always wanting the top of the line but I dont need that.I need something that will last a few years thats all.

So do you guys think that a quad q6600 will be the best move for me?A guy I work with builds pcs and he has some nice rigs and he will build the pc for me.I will ask him about his overclocking skills and see what he can do.He suggested the quad for me since I wont be able to upgrade for a few years.

What do you think of my case choice the antec 900?
I will go with 4 gigs of ram also to try to make my rig last as long as possible.The main reason this build is gonna cost me so much is that the only things salvagable is the hard drive,the dvd drive and the power supply.I have a store bought rig now and will never buy anothr store rig again

The problem is, you are asking for near top of the line as you want something that will perform ok in 3 years.
Even if you said 2 years my answer would be the same.

I have the Antec 900 and love it.
Very good cooling on lowest fan speed.
 
I see top of the line now as a xtreme quad core and a gtx 280.Those are out of my budget for sure.

I just dont want to get a dual core and next year games start using quad core technology and then I am in kinda the same boat needing to upgrade.

ALso with cpu intensive games like crysis will a QC or a DC perform better?I really appreciate everyoens help you are really helping me out.I just dont wanna spend money by getting stuff on my own and learning the hard way by spending $600 on inferior stuff you guys kick ass
 
You can get higher than top of the line performance by clocking lower cost parts.
The questions you are asking are what we are answering.

Alternatively, get cheap low end parts that are very overclockable to keep you going and do the same in a year or so.
Less risk but you dont get to enjoy stellar performance for a bit.

OP: I would recommend searching the forum because this topic has been brought up so many times you could easily find all the info you need in them.
 
Just get the quad and oc it a bit.. I doubt you really need that few extra hundred MHz when your quad is around 3.2 or so. And besides, it's not like quads are really expensive anymore, and you can also not have to worry about replacing the dual in the future.

I preach and I preach but people are still oblivious :( Funny thing is how the thread titles are the same and both of them are posted on the same page in the same section.

Lol, I'm with ya there. I just find it mind blowing that you wouldn't see the post before and not realize "O, that is exactly what I'm wondering" and then just chime in on the already open thread.

Lol sad thing is he didn't even need the search button, he had Intel Processors forum open before he posted a new thread, all he had to do was maybe look 5-10 posts down and see the previous Dual vs. Quad post.
 
Well maybe someone could title the next one Quad or Dual (vs dual or quad). ;)

On several of the forums I visit, this is the most frequently asked question it seems.
 
A Q6600 is damn good bang for the buck. if you do overclock just make sure to get a good aftermarket heatsink/fan.
 
I dont like to hijack peoples threads and start asking my own questions.I think it is kinda rude to butt in on someones thread and start asking your own questions
 
If questions related then I don't see why not. Pretty sure everyone would rather have less threads started.
