Dual Core 820

I gonna possibly take advantage of the intel retail edge offer they are going to have for retail employee's which includes,

Intel® Pentium® D 820 processor
Intel® Desktop Board D945PSN
Microsoft** Windows** XP Professional
Adobe Photoshop** Elements 3.0

All for $215.00

My current specs are

AMD 64 3200+
2GB DDR
250GB SATA Ultra 16
GForce 6800GT OC
WinXP 64bit

My question is,

Are there any sites that compare performance? Im wondering how much faster this cpu will be compared to my 64bit AMD and if its worth the upgrade? I know i will have to change my GPU and ram so i was thinking of getting a 7800GT OC and 1GB DDR2

you have to work for i think either retail or somewhere that sells intel products and is on their list. www.intel.com/retailedge

IMO - in single threaded apps and games the 820 will be slower than your 3200+

in multithreaded apps like 3d studio max or video encoding applications, plus in general multitasking in windows, it'll be faster

if you could swap out the intel board with a better, overclockable mobo later on, and overclock the 820, you'd see some nice increases, especially in games.

anyway for that price you really should get the combo and try it out, even if you don't like it you can resell the hardware alone for more than you paid for it.

my main thing is the money, its the performance gonna be worth the cost of a new video ard and new ram?

Oh just sell your soul already. DDR2 is cheap and you're going to have to buy a PCI-E videocard for whatever your next upgrade is anyways. BTW any word on AMDs EPP program this year? I've got my chips for Intel and will definitely snatch up one these but if AMD is offering a dual core EPP program it could be a tough call (Sorry hardcore Intel fans, I go with whatever is fastest at the moment).

Btw incase anyone is wondering, Intel does verify your employment, so if you don't work for a qualified retailer don't bother earning the chips as they will deny you (They actually called my employer last year to double check before they let my order go through).

I think AMD's was basically the Tech Tour promotional deal. 3200+ or Opteron setup IIRC

They included XP Pro x64 for the A64 and Windows 2003 for the Opteron I believe.

yeah the i got the AMD one, i got the last intel one too the p4 3.4HT w/ 915 mobo. thats the wife's pc though.
