If I ran dual boot of XP on the same drive and one of the partitions(sp?) got spyware, or a viruis, or anything it wasnt suppose to have, would it affect the other partition? Is there some way that the virius or spyware could work its way over to the other one? Thanks in advance!
 
some malware will write itself to each drive (partition) but its not all that common, spyware typically will reside in just the original OS and lack the bootstrap to load from a parallel install

I employ dual boots specifically because you can cross scan with an AntiVirus, Trojan or Spyware Scanner to the other install (partition\drive) with a reasonable chance the 2nd install isnt compromised
(also very handy as a platform for repair or data recovery)

What about if I booted XP in a NTFS partition and another OS such as 2k in a FAT32 partition, would that completly elimate the chance of it going to the other drive because one is NTFS and the other is FAT 32? Thanks again.
 
nope, odds are it wouldnt make any difference at all
on the other hand if it was a W2K\XP install and a Linux,
odds would be really high it couldnt cross infect and work

If youll follow that link youll come across two strategies that make alot of sense
one is using a filechecker, this is basically an ap that run a checksum on the security aps on a regular basis and reports if there are any changes

the other is Process Guard, its more or less an internal firewall for the OS Kernal
and prevents process hijacks or terminatiions

its damn near impossible to gurantee that an OS isnt infected without examining it from the outside, (Monitoring the traffic), a rootkit once run on a system is damn hard to detect
automated malware gets picked up pretty easy (though they are getting clever these days, there is one worm that goes to sleep when it detects scanning), but a rootkit is someone actually altering the OS at a very low level, and they would have removed any traces of the original infection vector, so as not to tip thier hand
