In case you missed it, Daylight Saving Time officially went into effect last night. CNN has a piece this morning covering it, and the reasoning behind the changes this year.

The additional four weeks each year of shifting an hour of daylight from morning to evening is expected to cut fuel consumption, as demand falls for electricity during early evening peak hours, according to experts.

The funny thing is, my version of windows 2k still hasn't updated its time. You think they would have fixed something as simple as that already.

none of my 2003 boxes here at home updated their time for some reason

we sampled about 100 of our customer's systems with a cross section of Windows 2003, 2000, XP, and NT4 and each one of those systems has updated perfectly.

If it saves energy why don't they keep DST 12 mo a year? Instead of hassling us.

Congress is rumored to be studying the results of the extra weeks to judge the results of the savings pro and con. It wasn't mentioned what they would do if it was found that it did nothing to save energy......Congress

Both of my XP boxes did the jump just fine. Only thing that had a problem was my Pocket PC.

Microsoft only released a patch (Through Windows Update) for Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003.

They released a program called TZEdit to update other versions of Windows.

P.S.

If "pro" is the opposite of "con", whats the opposite of "Progress"?

The extra hour of daylight in the evening is offset by the extra hour of darkness in the morning. We still get up the same time in the morning, it's not like we just sleep an extra hour. The lights still come on when it's dark. The only place where the lights are off are in the heads of the people responsible for these ridiculous changes. I concur, keep it at dst all year.

i didnt think lighting was our main use of electricity at the moment. it isnt the 1940's anymore.

I guess you some how missed the articles and notices that W2K is no longer supported and MS specificly did NOT released a free automatic update.

There is a unofficial fix at http://www.intelliadmin.com/blog/2007/01/unofficial-windows-2000-daylight.html

or if you have a large site MS offers a site wide update for about $4000 USD

Was this a recent patch that M$ released or something? Because my box (XP SP2) did NOT self-update, I ended up doing it last night manually, forgot to the previous night. Perhaps it's because I use Firefox & Windizupdate, not Microsoft's WU.

And WTF, they're charging $4000 for a time patch?
Assumptions:
1) $30/hour IT worker, so ~133.33 hours = the cost of the patch.
2) 5 computers updated per minute

...a company would have to have 40,000 desktops to make the $4k patch worth it. Hell, 1/2 or even 1/4 that number is still pretty ridiculously large, and doable... Of course with the average worker/user stupidity, it would suck to be the IT guy and have to devote your work day(s) to this single task - hell make the workers do it themselves. Open clock -> advance 1 hour -> Apply. I guess that's asking too much for the cubicle drones.

[bit offtopic]
A probably average example: my mom...She works for the "man" - the Federal Public Defender's office. In and of itself not paramount to the topic, but either a memo likely came down from D.C., or people around the office were all watching the same omgwtfbbq-the-worlds-going-to-end-just-like-it-did-on-y2k news reports at least... I guess she must have fallen for the doom & gloom reports. "Did you update your computer?" Me: "Meh no, don't need to"...thinking XP was going to update itself (guess not :p). More likely they'll bring in a high-priced advisor and force everyone to take a Windows time update class, all the while their case loads are huge with all the terrorism/immigrant/heroin addicted bank robber cases out there, and budgets (and staff sizes being cut). [totally off topic] Kinda like the mandatory full day courses they had to take not too long ago on sexual harassment - wasted time, sexual harassment plays, you name it. Forced upon by them in Washington, or be fired if you didn't do it..Yet what happens afterwards? Same as usual, sexually charged jokes and the like - stuff they were Orwell'd into not doing previously.

But bottom line, is this a big thing really a big deal (from the end Windows user perspective? [not intended targets ie: power, retail what-have-you]). I don't think so - oh no, your computer didn't update, so you're an hour early for today's meeting - oh crap that's the end of the world!

Oh yah! That's my other pet peeve, all these people whining about their pc'c automatically changing to DST. Who changes their clocks at home? The clock fairy?
You can double click on those number thingys followed by am or pm in the lower right hand corner and actually change the time yourself, took me all of 15 seconds of my time.
