In our VMware cluster, we're looking to expand the capacity by getting some more enclosures. I know we've got a few people here that use these so I figured it'd be the best place to ask -

Simple question, can hotspares be used across enclosures? For example, assume DS3400 + 2 EXP3000s:

DS3400 w/12 300GB 15K drives
2 x EXP3000 w/12 600GB 15K drives

Will hotspares in the second EXP3000 failover for the first EXP3000?
 
To confirm what I think I am reading - You could have a RAID 5 set of 12 disks in the DS3400 or the EXP3000 and the hot-spare in a different shelf/enclosure completely? If so that is why I love the enterprise stuff man it is just so cool what it can do. Recent member of the DS3400 club here.

Yes, exactly correct. However, you do have to be aware that if you're sparing from one enclosure to another, that you're tying up some of your potential throughput that could be used to pass actual production data from the attached enclosures up to the controller in the DS3400. The IBM and LSI best practices recommend the following:

1 hot spare disk for each RAID group type per enclosure. In other words, if you you have 2x 146GB 10k SAS drive based RAID arrays (say a RAID 1 and a RAID 5) in the same enclosure, then both arrays are using the same disk type (10k 146GB SAS) then you'd only need 1 hot spare per enclosure (as a minimum). If you had arrays with different types of disks, then the recommendation is 1 hot spare disk of each disk type, in each enclosure. Make sense? There are NO recommendations from either the ODM (LSI) or the OEM (IBM) to not have at least 1 hot spare per enclosure.
 
in simpler terms - have a hot spare in the DSXX00 as well as the enclosures.
