I have an 80GB drive that I have set to slave and use as backup. When I have something important I just toss a copy on it. Well recently the drive has not allowed my PC to boot, If it is plugged in my PC will not boot into windows at all. After the windows loading progress bar it just locks up.

I have ran CHKDSK and its coming out clean and fine. I can even see the files through DOS Mode (can't write due to no support in DOS, Boot Discs seem to not be able to write aswell). My bios are even reporting the drive aswell so I cannot see any issue that could be causing this... I never seen a slave drive prevent windows from booting.

Now heres the kicker, I installed the drive into my roommates PC and it works flawlessly. He is able to load windows and even browse the drive within windows perfectly. I know its not the cables or PSU since all my other drives that are larger and faster work and I even moved it around on different cables and jumper settings just to test it out.

Any idea's?
 
have you tryed booting into windows repair consol in there setup and using the FIXMBR command? i have had that same problem and that took care of it.

My system boots just fine without the slave drive so I shouldn't need to run it. The drive in question doesn't even have windows installation files on it... just backup files.

I was told uninstalling Nvidia IDE Drivers will fix it, going to try that next.
 
oh thats cool but how would that do anything considering it doesnt get past post and drivers arent a factor yet?Im tellin ya look at your boot configuration files and check out your bios.

Removal of the nVidia IDE drivers is recommended. I've had a drive do this, myself. Works fine in every machine but one. I swapped out the cable, tried a different connector on the Motherboard, no luck. What ended up working for me was reinstalling the OS. I assume some driver had gotten corrupt, but I wasn't about to dick with it. FWIW, that was Windows 98.
 
I got it working, It seems that it was the Nvidia Drivers. Removed them and it all runs smoothly.
