I want to know what the best route to go for building my next system.

1 raptor74gb?
or
2 raptor36gb?
or
1 raptor36gb and a regular drive

I'm a gamer and I currently have 120gb drive with an 8 mb cache.
I want the fastest load up times for my games.
Is there anyway to incorporate my drives and still get similar speeds(windows on the 120 games on the raptor) or should I go one of the other routes?
 
2 74GB Raptors in RAID0 is the way to go. Hooked up this configuration ealier today, and it blows the heck out of the 5 36GB Raptors in RAID5 that I have on other channel. They should warn ya that cheap Raptors are just that, cheap Raptors.

How many more threads are you going to post this myth in? As it's been beaten to death on the forums. RAID0 in IDE or SATA is not offering ANY speed increases in real world usage. You can run the fake aka synthetic benchmarks all you want. Read my article here, and then a much much more detailed one from Anandtech that I link to.

Wow, how many configurations of RAID0, RAID 0+1, or RAID5 have you run? I'm over 20 and counting, willing to try new stuff, and you? I've seen my drives hit burst rates over 170MB/s, with overclocked PCI bus of course, but I'm looking at options. The suggested set up gets Bursts at 137MB/S , avg transfers at 114MB/S on my rig. Random access times under 5ms. There are those that believe what they read, and those that try anyways. I'm obviously the latter, and happily so. As for synthetic benchmarks, my system was built to do video encoding, and performance with RAID 0 or RAID 5, is over 100% higher with RAID as opposed to without. Higher transfer rates matter. Why do you think we have PCIX? I want to see Dual Opterons with PCIX support, and I'll build another computer or 2.

I will say this. In most cases of RAID I have tried with the exact same drives. Along with increased performance characteristics, there is usually a down side. For some reason, with the SiI 3114 controller running RAID0+1, I experienced incremental data corruption. This has not been the case with any of the other controllers, either in RAID0 or RAID5. It is kind of interesting to the the exact same drives perform differently depending on number of drives, Controller, and Configuration.

A more fair testing methodology, and actually easier to carry out, Involves using the system performance test from the UBD. It has always detected all drives connected, or the array they are connected to regardless of controller. The Full HD test is rather thourough, and you see increases in one area of performance, are usually offset by losses in some other area. No test, should be taken as definitive. But, by referencing the results of various set-ups against each other, using the exact same drives, you get an idea of what is best for you.
