If you had $5k to build a folding box, what would you put in it?

Definitely a Supermicro board. The overclocking possibilities are damn impressive :)

I think you could get away with making 2x 4P rigs.

build a 4p rig and then hide the rest of the money and claim i spent it.. :D

An OC 4p rig for folding and a shiny 2p daily driver to use and fold on

Anyone ever folded on 4x10 core Westmere EX? That probably wouldn't fit in a $5k budget tho! LOL

I believe that some one has on another team and IIRC patriot tried one before he went back to college - the results were less than impressive and were smoked by 48 core AMD rigs. Someone has even manged to get a 128 thread beckton server running but that was 't very good either:confused:

I thought it was a 2x system that patriot had tried and not a 4x

I might be wrong

4P it was.

To compete with G34 one needs to do 8Px10C/20T these days... and also do it right.

Interesting. Those 4P AMD systems really do rule the roost eh.. Definitely going to have to build one at some point

The Supermicro barebones 8P system( motherboard, CPU boards, bridges, case, and power supply ) runs about $28K. Add about another $25K for CPUs and memory.

I do not know about you, but $50K can buy a lot of 4P G34 systems.

You could put together a full rack of G34 machines for that price.

Thinking about some more it would be an OC 4p for the bigadv WU, a couple of sandy bridge systems for SMP work and a 2500k with a 3 x PCIe m/b for GPU and uni proc.

8 socket xeon folding box :D think about -smp 160 haha

The criteria was for 5k, 8-way board/system w/o cpu is going to be 2x more that what ya got to work with here:p

thats hoping F@H even scales to 160 threads..

more then likely you would be doing 4 bigadv @ -smp 40 or 2 bigadv @ -smp 80

deeeebs was having interesting load balancing issues at 64/128 so much that my 4p was quicker in avg than his 8p...

I will try and help him get it tuned but it may just be the nature of 1567.

This. From what I know and what I've seen in benchmarks and the like Intel blows AMD out of the water core vs core and clock vs clock. The problem with having so many threads, though, is that F@H has serious problems feeding that many different ways at the same time. Maybe running two clients at once on that machine would increase output.

Dream folding box means money is no object to me ;)

Too bad Pande Group can't scale big WU to more than 48

This 1567 is a monster and superior to AMD in everyway at the same time saving power.

It has been stated over at FF several times that the WU and corresponding work cores, a3-a6, should scale to 128
