I'm currently at the hotel waiting to start our DR exercise tomorrow afternoon..and I'm really beginning to think that Virtualization is the way to go for DR.

I believe we are at a crossroads with App/DB folks and infrastructure folks where there really isn't a valid argument any longer to not failover, or DR to say VMware vSphere.

Knowing what's entailed for the next few days get's me thinking about why there would only be benefits to doing it this way..as well as a more fiscal solution, and stop giving Sungard $$ when I could simply stand up a vSphere environment and run a P2V and send the files to the other sites.

I don't know..just bored right now..getting ready to enjoy a real Philly Cheasteak and some brew and when I advised senior mgmt to do just that, they immediately told me no.

I need to come up with the valid couter-arguement of it not being a "true DR test."

Please share your thoughts especially if you are running your DR at another location and using a Virtual Environment recovering a Physical Environment.
 
We do a LOT of virtualization for the sake of DR. It's the primary driver that gets people to finally virtualize those Tier 1 apps. Like I tell people... I don't sell SRM (Site Recovery Manager) for actual DR failovers...I sell it because it makes testing so much easier. You can bring up a replica of your whole environment in a test bubble on a Tuesday afternoon without impacting production. Do that with physical gear.
 
What's killing me is the "old school" thought process of "well, it's not really a one to one if you stand it up that way...yadda yadda."

Even if they don't want to virtualize the Tier 1 apps or PROD environments yet, they should still consider Virtualizing DR no? How do you handle the the "it's not truely a DR if you are replicating prod in a Virtual environment?"

I'm really pushing the UCS implementation and am leveraging the PM group to get it signed. I saw your blog post on the new UCS packages..very nice!
