Downloads being downloaded without showing up on browser

For some reason my downloads aren't showing up. That happens in both FF and IE. After i click the download link, the download page just hangs "loading" and apparently the download starts on the background without my consent. If i wait a bit the download box will show up and ask me where i want to save the file. It wasn't like this a few days ago.

I am using Vista 64.

Does anyone know what is causing this?
 
Are you running any antivirus software; downloads are sometimes held up while the file is being checked.
 
Actually, usually a download starts before the download prompt comes up; at that point the file is already streaming to your computer from the web server and your computer is saving the file to the temporary directory. Often it's a moment or two before the screen actually pops up asking if you want to run the file (directly from the temporary directory) or save it (copy from temporary directory to another location on the hard drive).

At least, that's how it's always worked for me.
