got my Dothan Sonoma 760 today and began mod'n it, well at least an insert to help the HSF (Zalman 9500) IE heavy, sit properly on this OPEN processor. High side temps should be no more then 55c. So I started thinking and looking around what I could use. After doing the research the processor is .82mm above silicon. So a 1mm shim would work great. I found a 1.5-2m thicker rubber that I don't think I'm going to use as it is too thick! So I found a gladware container, exactly 1mm thick and semi plyable plastic. Capable of handling 55c easily, think microwaveable, boiling water, etc... Pictures below.

Why did you need the shim?

Was the cooler leaning off the cpu after install?
 
I've been using Pentium M for half year, touched 3 Dothan chips

my suggestion is: Set your goal to 2.8GHz on Air is a lot more realistic ;)

@ 2.8GHz it is a very strong performer already

Ahh but if we don't set goals just outisde of reach we never push to ring every ounce of performance out of the processor. Plus I might eventually use phase change on it.

No, but it is recommended as the chip does not have an IHS and would mean the whole force and clamping would be on the processor head. Inserting 1mm shim allows you .12mm of space between hard contact on the processor transistors and the HSF
 
Woot she's alive... whahahahaha... posted at 201fsb and 12 multiplier, for a boot speed of 2.4ghz which is a big hurdle just to get it to boot! I had problems to start.. the computer would power on for a sec and then shutoff... I removed the HSF and the board, and the cpu and reseated them all and managed to boot. I just now removed the shim and mounted the bit 9500 right on the cpu... yikers!
 
Oc'd to 2.76ghz, a mild 38% OC, but the gaming performance is what is surprising me!!! I just pulled off one of my fastest 3dmarks yet! What kills me is I was at 3.6ghz with the 3.2EE and got a lower 3dmark05 score... that is over 800mhz difference, there is no way this little dothan should be doing what it is doing!!! I've got timing to mess with and more, but I'm getting yawn, tired and will post some pics later... I'm guessing I might break 6k with 3dmark05 and this processor. OMG 5948 on 3dmark... will post pics tomorrow!

Also I've found that my mobo just does not like anything over about 250mhz... 10x250 is the max I've been able to post... Anyhow more to come!!

That's one of the dothan's strongest points, gaming.

I really enjoy Thief: Deadly Shadows so when I fired it up on my Celeron M 350J @ 2.17Ghz the game friggin' flew. Much faster than my P4 2.8C. I was even having speed issues at times (framerate was too high) and started getting flickering likes and jumpiness. Had to enable Vsync to fix it.

Got the CPU off ebay for $35 too.

edit: oh yeah, 2.17Ghz @ 1.17Vcore. 34C load with default CT-479 cooler

Nice temps I'm seeing 2.76Ghz @ 1.52-1.54v, 41c idle and 52c load. I'm just amazed though the speed difference!!!
 
Yeah Celeron M's are freakin good

I have a CM 350 and running at 2.33GHz @ 1.34v I feel no difference to my PM 740 @ 2.4GHz :eek:

3dMark05 - Nearly breaking 6k (Note on my 3.2EE Oc'd to 3.6 and the same settings I could not break 5814, so nearly 150 increase in score and I'm about 800mhz slower on the cpu!!!

Next a 3dMark01 run previously this was 24,347 with my 3.2EE Oc'd to 3.6. Now with the Dothan 29760.

Next 1M superpimod runs. Before I could not get past 36.5s, now with the Dothan, I'm at 27.3s. That's a pretty nice increase!

Wow just looked and that score would have ranked in the top 10 for Intel during our last challenge. Not too shabby at only 2.72ghz!!! LOL all the other processors are at the 4ghz range or higher... I'm at 1ghz slower and still holding my own... Now that is impressive!!! Forum link

Overall stability is great, I've run Prime95 for over an hour with temps getting up to 54c. Keep in mind this processor is rated at 1.375v and I'm juicing it 1.50-152v under load. Idle temps are around 38c, with 24c ambient temps

I read on Intels sight this processor has a max operating temp of 100c, Am I missing somthing... those are insane temps!!! Next steps are waiting for a 50k Ohm pot to do the vdroop mod. I'm planning on max of 1.8v, which should translate to about 1.75v at load. Assuming temps don't go too insane! For now I'm happy with the swap and will most likely be selling my 3.2EE since every aspect of my computing experience is faster now! Well I assume multitasking would be slowed now, but maybe not, not sure how I could check that!
 
damn! nice overclock! that think must fly in games, i love my 1.6GHz dothan and i cannot imagine anything faster lol. even at 600MHz, this thing can multitask and play music like crazy. maybe my next desktop will be with a dothan, or maybe a yonah :D

I am totally impressed and really wondering why Intel never did anything for the desktops with this processor... I mean gamers would have loved it!!! I can only imagine one of these with a 1066 fsb!!! And I'm sure they could have increased the transistor count to up them to the 3-4ghz range... before OC... I mean the processor is soooo small...

overall totally impressed by this little mobile processor!!!
 
Are the Dothans comparable [or better than] Athlon 64's at similar speeds? I've been hearing a lot about their improved architecture and efficiency. :)
 
Had some time to do some more tweaking with the Dothan 760 and the results are below:

Finally breaking 26s: 231fsb and some tight memory settings... I fooled around with various memory settings for about an hour and what you see produced the most bandwidth and fastest superpi times for me.

Final run bumping up FSB to 232.98, nearly 2.8ghz...

Incredible going from 36s to 26s, shaving 10s off of superpi and at about 1/4 the price. :D

Eh? I've got a 1.6 Banias in my laptop, should be no effective difference from a Dothan, and while it may be quick in games, it absolutely sucks for multitasking. My home setup with a P4 2.4 Northwood and the same amount of ram absolutely kills it when it comes to switching between apps, running multiple things at once, etc.

Food for thought:

Dothan(2.7ghz) at 33% less ghz is performing 36% faster then the 3.2EE(3.6ghz) If you boost the ghz up to 3.6ghz, the Dothan shoudl be nearly 67% faster then the 3.2EE, and I don't care how much Multitasking you do that is a large gap to overcome!

If you know of a benchmarking tool that consistently tests multitasking I'd be will to run side by side tests. I just don't know of any atm.
 
My Banias @ 1.9 has absolutely no problem multitasking that I can notice. I frequently have Photoshop, Revit, iTunes, and five or six ie wondows open and have had no trouble going between them. I'm hoping that my new Celeron-M 360J will be even better.

heh, must be the 2MB of cache because it multitasks like a god. not as well as my HT P4, but i think it's pretty smooth and not noticibly slower.

Funny thing is my 3.2EE has L3 of 2mb also, plus 512 L2... so I'm not sure why the Dothan would work sooo damn smooth at multitasking, but it does. I see no negative speed differences anywhere... Just games and things like superpi run a helluva lot faster!
 
lol honestly, i love the damn thing, one of my favorite cpu's. well, next to my Intel XScale PXA255 400MHz in my ipaq 4150 :D

i love that thing to, and it overclocks quite well :)

Ahhh tomato tomato... So I'm at 26.797 1M SuperPi, what to expect out of going to phase change? I'm at 2.795 ghz for that run. Assuming I do the vcore mod and add phase change run vcore at 1.8-1.82v and phase change at close to 0c under load think I'll be able to hit 3.2ghz? And then what to expect from 1M SuperPi? 24s?

Just curious how well they overclock?
I really can't seem to find anything on overclocking the 400FSB dolthan 2MB cores.
If at the least I'm tossing out my 2.4 celeron that's in my laptop and throwing this 1.8 in.

I'm sure there's going to be a performance jump with that upgrade.

I had a P-M 745, the 1.8Ghz Dothan and it overclocked very well, no problem at all to do 2.4Ghz with the stock cooler on my DFI 855GME and it did 2.79 with a microcool northpole cooler. Should be a very good chip for you.

A heads' up, Mobile Celerons/Mobile Pentium4/Pentium4-Ms and Pentium M/Celeron Ms use different sockets. The first group are Socket 478, the latter Socket 479.

and Intel would have saved itself from getting its @$$ handed to it by AMD64 in games...... I really don't understand why the P-M wasn't promoted by Intel for gamers, it is really comparable to AMD64 in the respect that it does a hell of a lot with a low clockspeed; and is roughly comparable clock for clock...... i.e. P-M basically scores about the same in 3dmark01 as a 2.4GHz Athlon64 i.e. s754 3700; if not a little more.....

Got to love big business not recognize what they are sitting on! I mean they could have upped the processor speed on the Dothan too to make it comparable clockwise to P4's

Ha! If you want to run multi-tasking benchmarks all you have to do is run two, any two at the same time!
