Doom III sound stutter

I increased the FSB to 240 w/ a 5:4 DRAM ratio to get a higher frame rate in Doom III, I got into the game and heard that the sound stutters. I'm running Abit's Realtec AC'97 onboard audio with the latest drivers. Anyone have ideas on what could be causing this?

I don't really know a lot about intergrated sound cards ( I have never used them) but I would suggest if you clock down your fsb and the problem goes away then you know what's causing it.

Carmack said that overclocking could cause artifacts in the video realm, so I wouldn't be suprised if the processor run audio got errors from overclocking as well. Sounds like that FSB is your problem.

Thanks for the comments. I realized that I didn't lock the agp/pci bus. After locking sound is fine. :)

on my system the sound either stops or gets scratchy/sporadic infrequently.. all i had to do to fix was to turn surround sound off and then back on in the system menu

how good is your cooling on your chipsets??? voltage? if temp is high or voltage is low that would cause the sound to do that...

Erm, know why they suggested overclocking video cards would be a problem? Because Doom3 uses parts of the GPU HARDWARE that haven't been used before. HOWEVER, the sound is pure software, unless the drivers can somehow accelerate plain directsound enough to actually affect the hardware (not directsound3d.) Even then, you'd notice the same thing in any game with software audio enabled (tried UT2004 lately? It defaults to software) -- if the problem really was hardware.

Look into other stuff such as what bitbum discovered. It's easy to leave those options improperly set. Beyond that, it's probably software. Drivers being the most likely candidate.

it does it in splinter cell classic as well.. i dont think pandora tomorrow has done it.
i have no idea what does it for me... tried 10 versions of drivers, i arctic silvered and 40 mm'd my northbridge, i have tried overvolting and stock volting the northbridge
tried with and without overclocking the only common thing is they both use eax of some kind... but about 15 other games work perfectly jsut every once in a blue moon sound gives out completely til reboot

Hrm. Normally I would say it's your onboard sound as most are crappy. However, that's a nForce2, so the onboard would be the SoundStorm, no? If not, get a real soundcard. Anyway, Doom3 doesn't use EAX, so I don't know what is going on there. I'd say the others maybe could have troubles with EAX, but if you have the exact same problem with Doom3 it's most likely exposing something wrong that they all have in common. The only thing you DIDN'T say you tried was a different version of DirectX. Well, I have no other ideas beyond that. d-:

you may just need better cooling on your southbridge. i run into sound trouble sometimes on my nforce2 which better cooling fixed (until i had to take the heatsink back off because my custom built video card cooler ran into it)

Yeah, these nForce 2 boards seem to push the southbridge quite a bit. I assumed that onboard audio was completely seperate, but, it would make sense that it may have to go through the southbridge quite a bit. Stick a heatsink on there and see what happens.

If nothing else, see what happens if you lower the fsb to something a little easier like 166 or so.
