With Doom 3 looming on the horizon, I’ve finally decided to take the plunge and get a new PC so I can play this game when it hits store shelves in early August. I’m trying to keep my price point as close to a grand as possible, but I can go over by a few hundred if needs be. I was just wondering what you people would go with in my situation. I’m sure there are others in the same boat who would like to know as well, as this is one of the next-gen games that will surely push hardware sales, and a lot of us are pressed for cash right now and trying to do this on the cheap. Here are a few ideas I have planned for the new box-on-a-budget:

1. I think I’m going to go with the AMD 64 setup as recommended here for overclocking a bit ago, being the Athlon 64 3000+ and Abit KV8 Pro combo…

2. For the video card I’m thinking of the BFG 68000GT. I want a card that’s high end for the processor and motherboard I’m getting now, as I want this system as a whole to last awhile sans upgrading…

3. I’m going to go with a 17” CRT monitor (space is a concern here, hence 17”), but I was wondering if there was a widescreen version I could buy as opposed to a square 4:3 one. I saw one once and I thought it was sweet…

4. I know you all want to hear Doom 3 in 5.1, but again, due to space and money constraints, I’m thinking of a Klipsch 2.1 setup…

5. For hard drive space I’m looking to get just a single 80GB IDE drive, probably Maxtor since I never have problems with their stuff. Not much space, I know, but it’ll suffice…

6. For Ram I was looking at Corsair XMS 512MB PC-3200. I would go a gig, but that gets costly quick…

7. I may be able to recycle my case, but I’ll probably just look for an Antec solution with a decent power supply and a somewhat presentable case. The Sonata comes to mind, but we’ll see…

8. For keyboard and mouse I think I’ll go with a Microsoft corded solution with tracker ball, as I’m not a fan of the newer mice and keyboards. I like ball mice for gaming as well (I’m just old skool like that)…

9. I’m thinking of a Creative Audigy ZS soundcard, as I don’t think the onboard sound will be good enough for this game…

10. A Lite-On DVD drive. I'm waiting on the dual-layer drives to be able to successfully back-up movies so I can do my whole collection in its entirety...

Any help here would be appreciated. I know this topic has been posted a million times over the years leading up to this game, but with the PC Gamer review being released with system requirements and Doom coming for sure this August, I thought I would post this now as many of us have been waiting until the games arrival to construct our new rigs…

YOU BETTER MAKE SURE THAT THE CRT CAN GO 1280X1024 AND RUN SMOOTHLY AT THAT OR YOUR GRAPHICS CARD WILL NOT BE USED TO ITS BEST SETTINGS.

IF YOUR NOT OVERCLOCKING, I THINK U ARE WITH THAT 64 AND MOBO, THIS WILL SUIT U WELL FOR THAT CLOCKING.

As for the dual layer burner, from what I know as of now they don’t work in backing up entire movies. I’m unsure as to why, but I frequent the DVDR Help forums and they claim it hasn’t been done. I did read a post yesterday of someone claiming it worked, but it may just be a lucky isolated incident. I’m guessing that the first round of dual layer burners have some kinks and bugs that need to be worked out, and until then I’ll sit tight and wait…

I’m unsure if the Max3 overclocks the same, but guessing off the top of my head I would say no. I haven’t heard a lot of talk about that board, but if anyone knows for sure that it overclocks well then I agree, I will definitely go that route. If someone has this board and views this post please let me know. I plan to purchase the parts for this puppy through Newegg pretty soon…

Anyone else see any problems with my configuration?
 
get a headset 60 bucks at the egg for pc 150's they are really really nice unless you love speakers then yea 5.1 if possible but you donth ave a lot of space i guess..
 
I would take the money from the sound card and put it toward another stick of RAM. Also, you might want to check out some of the cheaper NF3 boards with a lock.
 
yeah, don't settle for 512, you will be VERY disapointed. also, make sure it has good timings. I went with Kingston Value Ram, and overclocked it from 2700 to 3200, with 2,3,2,11 timings :)

80gig will be fine, good choice on everything else.... i'd wait on the soundcard if all you're doing is 2.1, the onboard sound is very nice. also, with the monitor, I'd go atleast 19". you'll wanna run games at 1600x1200 ;) w/ that much performance.
