doom 3 and overclocking

Just running some tests on Doom 3 and over clocking.

Overclocked gt to ultra speeds 400/1100 result doom 3 crash

flashed it with the leadtek ultra bios and over locked the gt to 400/1100, Doom 3 crashed

Flashed it with this bios http://www.mvktech.net/request.php?542
(btw thank you trans) it was automatically clocked at 400/1100, Doom 3 runs perfectly the card purs like a kitten.

Now it all comes down to why does overclocking in control panel cause Doom 3 to crash, and the bios flash to an ultra works just fine?

Maybe iD's way of saying don't overclock?

additional data, 3dmark's did the same thing with the leadtek ultra bios big crash in the troll lair.

the bios will up your core voltage...that's why...

btw my GT auto-detects to Ultra speeds and I played Doom3 straight through without a hitch...

i just read carmack saying that doom3 wont run for sure on overclocked parts. dunno why

I would still expect it to crash with the standard ultra bios that Trans linked us to, weird, but everything run solid with it.

maybe you botched that bios flash...or maybe it just didn't go through...either way...the only difference that's even remotely plausible is the core voltage...if Carmack had done something to prevent overclocking, mine would've crashed too...

Thats true, but I tried the flash to leadtek's many times , could be just an older bios from lead tek and my gt was one of the first too, its bios is old as well. I remember there was an ultra bios flash for developers with the prerelease cards.

I have the BFG 6800 GT OC running at 415/1060 and no crash in doom yet......hummmmmm

Haven't done the bios flash yet....waiting to ether water cool or get the NV Silencer5 for it not sure yet

He says that Doom 3 will use many transistors that no other games (and I guess benchmarks) used before inside the GPUs of newer cards. In other words, the card will be a lot more sensitive and work harder, producing more heat and needing more power. Really though, it just makes sense that all it should be doing is decreasing the maximum safe overclock under normal circumstances (though people here are talking about a few newer ATI cards not working at stock settings since ATI cut things way too close.) Probably in this case the card is cooled well enough, but lacked the power, so the voltage modification did the trick. I think he took such an extremeist point of view because, a. overclocking can't be "officially" supported and, b. it's just easier to say "don't overclock" to the less knowledgable users who just know enough to use coolbits and play with the numbers.

I can overclock my 6800GT higher in Doom3 than in Far Cry. CS:S also seems more sensitive than Doom3.

i dont think d3 doesn't like o/c.. my o/ced 9700 n 6800 runs d3 with no prob.
it could be more of heat issue.. try runnin it with case open, extra fan, pick cold day, etc if u goin to o/c everything to max for game/benchmark.

9700 might not be "new" enough. Either way, you do understand the problem with the way these are made? They make the chips, and those that don't meet a certain quality standard (eg can't be stably run under what they define as normal conditions) with what they decide will be the official clock speeds, they just put in the next card down (unless it doesn't meet that standard, then they go down one more or throw it away.) d-: In other words, the problme here is that since Doom 3 is using parts of the very newest GPUs that weren't being used before, ATI just screwed up by not appropriately raising their standard (or lowering the target clocks.) They can't be entirely blamed, they probably didn't have appropriate tests for what they thought weren't even being used. Anyway, not all cards even along the same lines are going to run into this issue. Many people will have the same thing, but working fine, while others have to underclock. In fact, many get overclocking without voltage modifications (like I did with my 9600 Pro) in Doom 3 and no issues. Basically, the doom 3 people were just making a "safe" statement to avoid too many user complaints. They probably didn't know about the cards being produced that couldn't run Doom 3 properly without underclocking, and they can't be entirely blamed for this. They couldn't really hope to explain all the details about how some cards can be safely overclocked like insane to play Doom 3 while others can't. Especially since they aren't allowed to imply that they officially support ocing I bet. d-:

Anyway, this might still not even be the issue, I'm merely saying that it's one thing to consider as a possibility. Oh, and I should point out that using more transistors would probably produce more heat. d-: (Eg in hotter cases you might be more likely to run into troubles anyway.)
