Mainly because nowadays people find things through Google. Does anyone still attempt to land on a relevant page by manually typing a URL and hoping that it goes somewhere?

So basically what I'm saying is that whatever person owns ipad.com will probably NEVER get bought out by Apple. There aren't even any ads on that site, so I'm guessing this person isn't even making up the cost of his registration and hosting fees.

Also, browsers like Chrome have suggestive URLs when you type ipad into it, so the user will always hit Apple's site.
