Does Tubing Size Matter?

I was just wondering what the benefits were to have bigger tubing... The system that i am building now has 1/4 id is that bad? Thanks for the input.
 
It really depends on your other components.

If you have a pretty strong pump (D5, Iwaki, Blueline, etc), high flow CPU block (Apex, MCW6002) and a relatively low restriction Rad/HC then the tubing size can indeed effect overall flow and therefor overall performance. How much? That completely depends on your components.

Cathar had posted a thread once based on testing where he found that there *can* be a difference in overall flow when you go from a 3/8" ID tubing up to 1/2" ID tubing. He suggested 7/16" ID tubing as an effective intermediate size with both high flow characteristics as well as being easier to bend/fit into a case than the more usual 1/2" ID tubing many were using at that time. Since you are talking of using smaller tubing than that which he tested it follows that it can in certain cases have a negative impact on performance for certain sets of components...it may not for yours however.

If you are using 1/4" or 6mm tubing while it may seem small may be truly the size you need depending on your other components. I think both AC as well as Innovatek both use that size tubing because their kits are made up of components intended to be used with that size. There is some pretty good performane to be had from those kits as well.

If you could please list your components and then someone here may be able to make an educated guess as to whether your system is being 'choked' by the tubing or not. If its an all-in-one kit simply list that.
