Does this Airflow Make Sense?

I was hoping to maximize the amount of cool air hitting the radiator and am considering this airflow layout.

Anyone see any problems with this at all?

Looks fine... but I don't have water cooling so I wouldn't really know. I don't see any problems with it. I think as long a cfm in = cfm out, you should be good. Correct me if I am wrong somebody...
 
As long as you keep the CFM goin into the case, and coming out as close to equal as possible, it should be good. And keep in mind, that the amount of air moved by the 3x 120mm fans will be reduced by the radiator. If its possible, i would mod the 80mm intakes to take 120mm fans.
I only see one potential problem with the setup. The PSU pushes hot air out the back of the case, and if the intakes on the back are too close to it, they'll be pulling warmer air into the case. If they're far enough from the PSU it should be fine - as long as the psu is at the top of the case, and the intake fans lower down, since the warm air coming out of the psu will rise

Yeah the 80mm are below the PSU and I think it should be ok since hot air rises. The 120mm Fans I am using will be about 80+CFM.

I am looking for some nice quiet 80mm to use for the intake fans with maybe 25-30CFM a piece. I think that should be about equal when all is said and done.

If your pic depicts that you will only have 1 80 mm on the back and 1 on the front with 25-20 cfm a peice that certainly doesn't equal the 80+ cfm each of the 3 120mm fans combined. Are you going to have 2 80s in front and 2 in the back or 1 in front and 1 in back?
 
Judging by the pic having 3 arrows for the top and there being 3 fans up top I'm assuming the rear has 2-80mm fans and the front also has 2-80mm fans since there are 2 arrows on each.

Put your fans as close to the object you want to cool as possible and unless you've gone to extraordinary lengths to seal the case, any excess (or deficiency) will bleed out (or be pulled in) from the multitude of gaps in the chassis.
I've never seen a data at all that supports the idea that the low CFM, low pressure axial fans we typically use can create positive or negative pressure in a standard PC case- they are simply too porous.
 
i have that setup with 1 120mm front intake, top exhaust and back intake and its working great so far. MB temp this morning was 29c.
 
if all else fails, just experiment. change the fans around, run a cpu intensive prog and check the temps after an hour or so.

change the configs around till you get the best (lowest) temps.


but from looking at your picture, it doesn't look too bad. should work fine.

Each arrow represents a fan in the picture. So there will be 5 80mm fans and 3 120mm fans total.

That is exactly the point, if you have more coming out than coming in then air will come in through gaps in the chassis. The problem with this is dust. Many people have dust filters on their intakes, however if you have more air going out than in, air must find another way in...a way that just so happens to circumvent your lovely dust filters. If however you have more coming in than going out you will not have much of a problem with dust.
 
I would have the rad fans blowing the other way round. Ideally you don't want case air to cool the rad.

Nice suggestion but not really practical for my purposes. Hot Air rises, and I would presume the air from the rad being the hottest of anything in the system. If I point those fans downwards, then I will be blowing hot air against its natural tendency and most likely causing turbulence within the case.

I think you are overestimating the power of the convection of the air. The force of the fan blowing downwards is many times more powerful then the tendency of hot air to rise.

I do agree with you on that one for sure. Though as far as airflow is concerned, I have never seen the suggestion you made in parctice. Anyone have any experience with this?
 
The whole idea of airflow is to exhaust the hot air (intake air will always find ways in, most cases have vents around the bottom of the case.)

With that being said, that 80mm fan should be an exhaust, as of right now, you are pulling cool air in, and its being sucked right out from your powersupply. Not only that, you are probably recycling some of the powersupplies hot air.

It also just disrupts airflow. Front->Back, Down->Up. When you have fans going every which way it creates dead zones.
