That serves to connect the output of a playback device (i.e. headphone jack) with the microphone jack of a recording device so as to directly record the playback?
 
ie plug one end into your cd player and the other into your pc and record directly? i think just about any standard cable like that will work for it, but im not sure

Yep, that should work for you. You can get a cheap 5ft or so one at radioshack for about 6 bucks.
