Does Antifreeze Work Well?

I heard somewhere that antifreeze is good to put in with the water to aid in cooling. Is this true and if so about how much should you put in.
 
Anti-freeze is not good for your computer or the environment unless you plan on using your computer where the coolant might freeze.
 
Are you concerned with biological intrusions or perhaps lubricating the system?
 
People use anti-freeze as a precaution, to prevent corrosion (some want to believe it helps by breaking the surface tension of the water). However, the best thing to use is not Anti-Freeze, it's Super Coolant. Neither will improve your temps, but the Ati-Freeze has a more negative effect than the Super Coolant. Either way just use a very small amount so the thermal conductivity of the water isn't affected much.
 
Anti-freeze is perhaps the most convient, and cheap, method of adding a corrosion/bio inhibitor to your loop. It has the disadvantage of being mostly a freeze-depressant, which transfers heat far less efficiently than water.

What you really want is an additive that is primarily a corrosion/bio inhibitor. That way, you have to add only a very small amount, and reduce the cooling capacity of the water only minimally.

Nothing really "aids" cooling when added to distilled water. Everything you add lowers the efficiency of your solution. However, some are forced to use additives for a variety of reasons. Corrosion inhibitors are required when using aluminum based components in a loop with copper. Most people should use some sort of biocide to prevent algae growth in one's loop. However, if one doesn't have any case windows or lights in the case, one can go without it.

Anti freeze, like others have stated, is basically an all in one solution for a corrosive inhibitor and a biocide. If you use it, the trick is to not use a lot. It isn't some magical formula that cools better than water.
 
Antifreeze, in very low concentrations, acts as a surfactant (like a soap) which helps reduce water's surface tension. (1-2% antifreeze). Any more than this very minute quantity will start to hurt the efficiency of the loop.

In medium concentrations it can act as a potent biocide, the ethylene glycol varient expecially (the propylene kind is less toxic, but still toxic in higher concentrations). (3-5% antifreeze).

In medium high concentrations it begins to counteract the effects of galvanic corrosion, depending on the voltaic potential of the water circuit... Low potential circuits (copper and brass, or copper and nickel) can be prevented by lower concentrations (5-9%) medium potential circuits (aluminum and copper) can be prevented by medium concentrations (8-14%) and higher potential circuits (steel, aluminum, or mixes of many metals) can require upwards of 30-50% antifreeze.

In extremely high concentrations it acts as a dyeing agent, and severely limits the efficiency of heat transfer in the loop.
 
If your looking for a good corrosion inhibitor then this stuff is great and only takes a 2% mixture to 98% distilled H20. You can also get smaller quantities of the stuff from any AC dealer (AC Fluid).
