Does adding a copper shim actually make a difference?

It won't make a difference in CPU temperature. If you're not clumsy, it won't make a difference in whether or not you break your CPU core.

Well I never had a problem before so I'm not going to worry about it now.
 
Every time I've seen shims used on CPUs they have eneded up doing more harm then good. Cause if they are not 100% the exact right thickness they ether are not supporting the heat sink and allowing it to silvel and possably move around some resulting in fried chip, or they are to thick and the core is not comming in proper contact with the heat sink. And I don' think I need to tell you what happens there on an AMD chip. This is in fact on of the reasons Intel moved over to the heat spreader design that AMD resently adapted to there Chips it eliminates CPU failure do to poor heatsink connectivity.... or more of reduses the odds of it happening.

So the lesson of this story today is. SHIMS SUCK!
 
I use a shim with my RBX because the pads don't make enough contact, and I don't trust them anyways. Shims only suck if they're not made right. I'm using the mica Universal shim, and it's the perfect thickness.
 
Shims are a necessity... especially for me as I use overweight HSFs and I transport my PC cross country 4 times a year (live in AZ... go to college in FL)

I shudder to think what me processor would look like if I wasn't using a shim.
