The UPS actually continued to work sorta for a while after that.. but the monitor filled the room with smoke and the dorm smelled like fried electronics for over a week.

I have a an APC 1500VA LCD, bought it for cheap @ BBY when they where having clearance...I uset my PC as a media server too so needed one also..
 
I've got a big compaq UPS. Got it from work about a year ago. it was running some servers, but then we upgraded power in that room. It runs my whole desk at home for quite a while, but it better since it freaking weighs a ton.
 
All my computers have one. Blew two power supplies with a budget off brand UPS. Sticking with APC so long as they maintain their quality.

I haven't tested in a while, but I think the longest I had my backup running my desk for was 45 minutes and it still had 1 bar left. It's powering my computer, monitor, speakers, and cable modem so the drain isn't really killing it.

Yeah well one day i got bored and hooked a couple of car batterys together, Plugged a battery charger into it and borrowed a step up transformer, it powered my xbox for about 2 hours ;)
 
Hell yes. I've never understood why someone would spend thousands on their pc/montiors etc... and then leave it all plugged into a $4.00 powerstrip they got at the k-mart.
 
I live in the UK. London to be precise.

I have 2 PCs, both have a UPS.

In England we do get brown outs, but you have to know what to look for. Next time you are sitting in your lounge, watching the telly or sitting in front of the PC and you notice your lights go dim for a split second, a brownout may just have occurred.

Ive also experienced a power dropout (when the power momentarily goes totally). During this your PC might do a reboot, your digital clocks might reset, though most electrical goods can run continuously during a dropout.

I like the idea of having power, even after the whole street has lost its power, hence to have a lamp connected to the UPS is very important. After you have shut down your PC, you might still want light and a low energy lamp should be able to run off of a UPS for quite some time.
 
I was forced to buy one about a year ago since a Wallmart was built practically in my backyard and caused lots of brownouts during construction. I never regret getting it. PC, LCD, router, modem, and external drive are all on the battery portion. Everything else is on a quality powerstrip. I baught another one last year when I baught my 50" DLP and sound system for it. I hated having my DVR take about 30 min to redownload all the TV listings and in the interim not be able to watch my recorded shows.

I wouldn't think of powering any of my machines without one.... seriously.
 
Just bought another pair of shiny new apc ups's, il post pics in the next hour.
 
WOW!!! I can't believe 1/3 people here don't use UPS. Most people can't even tell even if they have brownouts which is major source of killing HD along with other parts. Sure, some are bad that you can tell but others you really can't tell but it still happens. I would definitely use UPS with AVR for my PC and I am using it now. Maybe when I test out pc, building one or for short use I would plug into outlet directly but not as permanent measure.
 
Anyone know of a site that tests how well various UPS work?

Something like a JonnyGURU for UPS's. You know, load the thing up and see if it meets the specifications. Hook it up to an oscilloscope and check the waveform and such. Check the switching time and how well it handles bad power mains.

That would kick ass. There are so many crappy UPS out there it's hard to know which are any good.
 
Wow interesting poll because I'm surprised that MORE people use UPS than not. Funny voting options (the FedEX one)! ROFL.. (too bad there's not a smiley face for "ROFL")
 
In a quiet room, when a ups switches to batterys i have allways found it makes a irratating humming sound.

I thought your power across the pond was really satble. How often are you switching over to batteries to notice?

All electronics produce some electronic hum how well insolated for noise they are will cut down on it.
 
Just when the breaker trips becuase a fuse has blown somewhere, only every couple of months.

My CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD gives me roughly 15min of power for the system in my sig and its actually very quiet, it has a small fan inside which you can here but the best part is the beeping alarm is barely audible vs some of my older ones which will break your eardrums.

My apc units are fanless luckly, its the coils that make the noise i think.
 
I have UPS's on all my desktops, router, modem, and switch. Not my monitor or anything like that... the sole point is to get me through the 0.5 second to the 5 minute power outages.

The frusterating ones are the half second power outages that are enough to flicker your lights and reboot your comp when you're in the middle of something.

Then of course we have this habit of popping breakers when working on the house, it's nice to have a few minutes to flip the breaker back on before the comp goes off. Also the APC software turns my comp off when the UPS gets down to a certain % of power left, which is always better on a computer then just being hard shutdown.

Also, one of my UPS's makes zero sound, the other has a fan that makes a little bit of sound but I can only hear that when my comp is turned off. At which point, I can turn the UPS off.

Checking my APC software... in the last 24 weeks:
Unit switched 6 times becuase of blackouts (Ice storm here in December), 17 minutes 50 seconds on battery between the 6 times.
Unit switched 2 times becuase of electrical noise, 10 seconds on battery between them. That's when the lights snap off and on before you can really notice it, but it's enough time to shut off your comp normally.
 
I have one on my server and one on my Directv Tivo in the living room.

But the rest of the machines are fine. We rarely (knocks on wood) have any power outages or brownouts (at most maybe 1 or 2 a year).

If I lived in an area that had more power problems I would have more UPS's. For example, Florida the power is really up and down and I would definetly want on there ;)

In order to get that kinda run time you would need something like apc 3000va, or one of those 1500va with extra battery pack.

My c2d system with 5 hdds, 8800gtx and 37westy gets about 8min runtime on battery on a 1500va ups

How many watts is that thing? I can run a 200w bulb off my 650va ups for 14 mins .
 
well my system + 37" westy uses about 320W when idle and over 400 at full load according to apc runtime chart that should be around 15 min on battery on 1500va ups.
 
Bloody hell who can be doing with that power usage just for a monitor :eek:

From what I have read the W3 uses 210W when on.
At idle it will be less than 10W.

How did you measure it?
 
actulally w3se usues about 90W when on, My ups has lcd that shows current wattage, with just the westy on it shows 90W
 
ahh, I just read his post again and thats his 37" Westy + System Power :)

I have the 1300VA APC one for my computer, monitor (uses about 60-70W), and speakers - and it's just completely overkill. With my Q6600 at 3.51GHz and 8800GTS overclocked I was registering about 280-300W during gaming. When I put full load on the CPU and GPU, I maybe hit 330W, which is unrealistic. Speakers full blast may add another 70W... anything else I might hook up is negligible right now. But at least I've got a lot of room for expansion. Idle shutdown time right now is reading 29 minutes.
