Ahoy shipmates, I just picked up some of these, how do they work? I am putting them on a nvidia FX 5200 256mb SE Oced card that is running too hot, I upgraded the gpu fan already.

I bought a pack of those, the acutal sinks are very small from 5-10mm tall. Crap if you ask me.
 
ya they are shortys, I have seen the tall ones out there. they are nice, I want to get some feedback,because if they are crap.. I am going to take them back and mail order the other ones. I have an old p2 heatsink... I bet I can chop that up . mod time??? :p
 
Correct me if I am totally wrong, however, I do not believe that the RAM heatsinks make a big difference. Having a good fan/heatsink combination to cool the GPU is most important.

I have an ASUS Nvidia FX 5900Ultra (GPU~450mhz/Memory Clock~850mh = stock speed) with the original heat sink/ fan and an additional PCI card fan and its core still idles at around 58 C. How hot did you card get before/after you upgraded the GPU fan?

Anyway, heatsinks are an important part of the cooling equation for a processing unit but for memory I do not think they matter all that much. Of course since you are overclocking you never know. Then they might play a role. How much are you overclocking the videocard by anyway?
 
78 c was as hot as it got :mad: , good airflow around the card , after I changed the fan, it went down to 64-65 c, so I opened up the front of the case and put a small intake fan up there, now temps are 59c at idle ( hotter under load ) . I put one of those PCI blower slot fans in and it make it hotter. :(
So ramsinks are where I am at . dont thin they make a cooler for a 5200 do they? :confused:
 
They would work better if some sort of airflow hits the heatsinks...
 
yes, airflow does hit them. What type of temp drops will I see? 1 - 5 degrees C?
 
I would personally invest in a VGA Silencer, or otherwise. RAMsinks didn't really do it for my TI4200 as much as a VGA silencer did.

Can't be just any airflow. Has to be fresh (cool) air and there has to be a direct route for warm air to be exhausted. Randomly placed fans will not cool anything. If you're not afraid of a little modding, come up with something to isolate the card from the surrounding environment and give it some direct access to the outside air. The easiest way to cool that card down will be to work with the case. Add a couple more, or increase the power of the existing fans.
