Do hardrives DRASTICALLY effect a computer's speed?

If so, how? I don't get why people spend so much money on WD Raptors and such. My setup currently has a Samsung U-ATA/100 HD; is it (HD) slowing my PC down? Thanks.
 
The amount of HDD influence on the PC speed depends on what you are doing. Certain workloads that are I/O bound are likely to be drastically affected by the HDD speed, while others, which are CPU or graphics card bound will not.
 
Well there are a number of reasons to buy a Raptor. The first is that it is an enterprise type drive, so it is made to last longer than your average desktop drive. This is why they carry a five year warranty generally. The second reason is pure speed. It makes your system boot up much faster. You can also load your core applications (games included) onto the drive and it will load them faster. If your machine ends up using swap space on the drive then a faster drive can be better as well. People don't use these for storage, just for their core applications that they use all of the time. If you tried it in your machine, you would understand.
