Do download accelerators really work?

I have 1500kbps download and I was wondering if a download accelerator program would really help at all.

Do they? Which one is the best for free?

You're running plenty fast already. You may see a difference on large downloads, so maybe it's worth a try. Most, if not all, of them work by splitting the file and downloading with multiple threads. The time it takes for the accelerator to latch may come into play on small downloads at your speed. Try and see. My down speed is quick too, so I never saw a need. I wouldn't know which one to get, either, but I'm sure someone will come along who does.
