A friend of mine wanted a cheap overclockable CPU so I recommended the 2500+ because in the past most of them have been able to hit 3200+ speeds easily. But it turned out that his was multiplier locked.

I work in a computerstore and he wants me to go look for an unlocked CPU. But I dont want to test every 2500+ to see if they are locked. What bridges are cut on the locked CPU? Then I can see it through the package.
 
Mobile Bartons are the only ones not locked. Desktop bartons have been locked for a good while now.

Newegg has the bsest selection.
 
Even a locked 2500+ will hit 2.2GHz (3200+) without a problem. Mine did, though it took a minor voltage bump.

True, but they need AGP/PCI lock to run 200fsb and that isnt available on a KT333 or KT400 board.

but i did have my kt3 ultra running a 210 FSB... i still tink at thoise settings i had it rivals some Nforce2 baords today. needed some CPU voltmods though..
The board has one PCI/AGP divider that kicks in a 165FSB and drops the PCI back to spec...

The barton 2500+ does 166fsb standard. I am hoping that at 200fsb a new divider will kick in which puts the AGP/PCI back to spec. I hope that the CPU will be able to handle that though.
 
All desktops are/will be locked (it was just a matter of time) but the Mobiles have to stay unlocked.

nope, its only has one. there is no divider for 200 FSB....but it is still in sight. I knwo it can be done. One thing you might want to try. I noticed my HDDs were craping out with the higher FSB. but when i set them up in RAID o na 32/64bit RAID card the ran great. I think its because the controller card was ready to run on a 64bit/66MHz so a overclocked 33Mhz/32bit slot was no problem for it. The rest of my PCI parts seemes to be ok, like a SB Aug. NIC card and video....i useally run my APG at 80Mhz 1.7v anyway now with the Nforce2 being abel to change it sepertaly.

Thats not true. engenring sampel intel CPUs are unlocked. Althlong 64 CPUs are unlocked from stock multiplyer down. Althlon FX (51-53-??) CPUs are unlocked compleatly. I kid you not but my friend got a 3200+ off neweg and it was unlocked (older date on CPU)
 
you can hit 3200+ speeds on a locked 2500+ if you can get the fsb to 200 and it runs stable.

You could try the wire trick or that thing that you connect the L1 bridge with a pencil or solder...

um, he's just referrring to the AXP
 
BTW, why do mobile AXP's have to be unlocked? Do they throttle down using the multiplier?
 
Yes, mobile athlon xp's have a feature on them called PowerNow! or something to that effect. So, if the laptop they are in supports that feature, it can change the multiplier on the CPU dynamically according to the load. The multiplier HAS to be unlocked for PowerNow! to work.

Well considering that the context of the thread started on the AXP then yes my statments are in context while you're statments are not.
I would have thought that by now everyone knows that the A64 are multi unlocked down and that only Intel's enginnering samples are unlocked (does this matter? :rolleyes: ) and that older AXP can be found unlocked (what's AMD going to do recall all of them?).
