I have a Vantec C7040 Socket A heatsink, and so far it has been pretty good. The temps are pretty good (36 idle, 45 load on a 3200+), but recently the fan has been making a odd noise. Nothing real strange or loud, just kind of out of the normal. I took it apart and cleaned as much dust out as possible but still no improvement.
I would like to replace it since the odd noise its making looks like it isn't going away, and the fan has always been kind of loud (38db). The specs say that it is 74.5 x 74.5 in size. How hard would it be for me to make an adapter to go from 74.5 to 80mm, or maybe even 92mm and how exactly could I go about making one? Also, if I did use an adapter, would I lose any cooling performance as long as I got a fan that met or exceeded the current fans CFM?
