I have an antek vsk2000 and was thinking htat if I segmented off the expansion bays and dedicated on intake fan to push fresh air into there, then used the rear ports as an passive exhaust it would imporve the cooling of my video card...assuming i have an aftermarket cooler on there that has an open fin layout.

Pardon the poor "editing" skills, but the picture below shows about what kind of structure I would be looking for. My drawing doesnt really convey that I am trying to completely segregate the top from the bottom. I would construct the partition to go from just short of the mobo all the way across to the case side. I wouldnt even mind a piece that totally boxed it off.

the pic is from before I built my server and moved all the HDDs to that. By movign the hard dirves and ditching the old Xfi I now have a minimalistic setup that only has a 5830 in the expansion area and one HDD suspended in a vertical orientation inside the 3.5 cage. I also have a Coolermaster Hyper 212+ ont he CPU now and Yate Loons instead of those tricools.

so my question is what kind of materials should I consider for this? no cardboard unless its for mockups.
 
the fans will determine the airflow. if you dont already have a front intake fan you should put at least one in. that would balance out the intake/exhaust. that wont make the videocard run any cooler, but it will improve airflow which will in turn exhaust the heat better. if you attempt to block off the bottom part of the computer there will be no way for teh heat to be exhausted. that little "vent" is no where near enough. if u want ur card to run cooler get an aftermarket cooler, and install some more case fans to improve airflow.
 
I have no expansion cards now so removing the slot covers give the air plenty of escape routes. I dont want my card to run cooler, I want it quieter. if I dedicate airflow to it then the fans could spin slower and still heat the same. blocking it off keeps the cooler air from naturally ascending. natural convection and air pressure forces it out of the back. I beleive the term is positive pressure,but I could be wrong on the terminology. its the same principle as a lot of modern PSUs that have a single 120mm fan on the bottom pulling air in and just a grill on the rear for the air to escape.
 
Unless you wall off the entire bottom of your case somehow, it won't make a difference. The CPU and PSU need to get cool air as well. Do you have two intake fans at the front?

yep, two 120mm fans. and thats what i want to do, wall it all off
 
Then make a cardboard mockup and for the real thing use some styrene sheets from a hobby store or something. Or get a big tupperware box and cut out sheets of plastic.
 
I found some black foamboard made by elmer. It looks nice and should do the trick. I will do a couple of cardboard mockups like you suggested.
