The company I started working for in Dec 2014 has a large monolithic file directory structure (virtualized at this point). It's a manufacturing plant that works with multiple vendors, so we have a ton of files that aren't used anymore (company has been around for 50years).

The VAST majority of the files really need to be read-only, and can be archived. I'm looking at trying to find a way to archive all the old files (5+ years old), which still being available, and in the "same location" as far as the end users go.

I don't want to resort to using a bunch of symlinks, but basically I'm wondering if there's a solution to move the old unused files to another datastore, while keeping the directory structure intact and transparent to end users?

MS Server 2012 R2 for file system
Vmware HA Cluster
16 + 24 Drive Equallogic SANs
Redundant Off building/on-campus Disk backups - Tape backups for offsite
Spare Server 2012 r2 license available for use as well as Server 2008 r2
