I'm looking for a relatively-effective noob guide for calibrating a new LCD display. I know that nothing strictly web or software-based will be as good as having a meter, but I'm not doing anything professional, just want to have decent, fairly accurate colors.

Any suggestions? TIA.

find the setting for either the backlight or if that isn't available, contrast, put up a pure white fullscreen image and adjust the setting down until it no longer hurts your eyes and then look for the setting that controls the color temp and set that to 6500K or warm.

Beyond that, without a hardware colormeter you wont know what settings on you monitor make for accurate images. and try to avoid the color controls in your display driver since they only limit the potential color gamut to achieve results and that works against color accurate output. It is best to use the display's own controls in the even you want to tweak it.
