So I bought an aftermarket cooler because the AMD one is damn loud, but it's still too loud for my tastes. My 955 black edition is running at stock speeds, with temps at idle of 28C and 38C at loud, so no worries about that. Is there any way, without getting a fan controller, to completely shut off my cpu fan at low temps?
 
Buy a quiet fan?

You will end up overheating very quickly if you disable the fan completely.

I've unplugged the fan pin from the mobo and idle temps were not all that bad. Besides, what i'm looking for here is just something that turns off the fan at low temperatures.
 
turning off the fan at low temps isnt an option, your chip will still heat up a ton and die eventually.

Do yourself a favour and buy a single high end quiet fan for that cooler.
 
I would download speedfan and turn the fan down manually. I believe you can turn it all the way down to 0% if you want through the program but dont quote me on that.
 
Speedfan is a great way to control your fans. I don't recommend turning your fans off completely, but Speedfan will let you do it if that's what you really want to do.
 
You might have an option in your bios for your default fan speed and default speeds are normally kinda noisey, whether it be changed to 10% from 100% etc is all up to your bios options.
 
What cooler? What fan? What RPM is it running at and is it a PWM fan? What mobo? Does it have a fan speed profile in the BIOS you can change?

As for turning a CPU fan off, it is not always true it will over heat, many good tower coolers out there can run passive and many are sold to be run as such, however, this does not mean yours can.
