PC Perspective has published an editorial this afternoon that looks into the ongoing debate of how the two major graphics companies interact with game developers and how some of the most recent "benchmarks" are doing more harm than good to the community.

I think we should go ahead and clear the air by starting with that very simple, yet often overlooked point of contention between those companies, the media and the enthusiast gamers they cater to. That doesn’t mean that neither company has any responsibility to the community that pays them; on the contrary I think that you will agree that these companies owe you quite a bit.

Kyle made a prediction similar to this a few years ago. I think he mentioned that we will probably see titles that only work on one piece of hardware or the other because of sponsorship from Nvidia and ATi. (this was before AMD bought Ati of course)

Is he saying, in other words, "ignore the current DX10 benchmarks"???????? At least until both parties have had a chance to quak their drivers???

Or is he just saying to take the benches with a grain of salt??????

Wasn't DX10 supposed to get rid of differences? Theoretically DX10 code should run unchanged on any card that supports DX10 regardless of manufacturer.

Theoretically it *could* be done this way, but with NVIDIA writing much of the graphics code for Capcom's PC version, I'm guessing it wasn't done this way by design...

DX10 doesn't get rid of bugs in drivers or poorly written code. :p

I'm asking myself the same question. Game (application) makes calls to the DX10 API. DX10 passes those calls to the OS. OS send request to the driver. Isn't that how its suppose to to work? Shouldn't the game work even without optimization on any camps hardware? Geese, I think its just a way to "quak" the drivers.

no, as the drivers is what tells the vid card what to do and how to interact that ends up on your monitor basically, it has the last say.

You can't blame nvidia when the other game was done w/ ATI.

You sort of can when you consider that CoJ was seen by both companies prior to release. Nvidia at least had an opportunity to optimize their drivers for the game. Their chief complaint about it was that the game wasn't working properly with AA and that was affecting all hardware.

Lost Planet however ATI/AMD hadn't even seen and I'm sure some basic optimizations would have gone a long way.

And while the specs are tighter that is only in regards to the capability, not the performance or specific tuning of each architecture. It's still up to the drivers and the compiler to arrange the instructions into a format that is most optimal. Which means some games could use shaders that are scalar and difficult for AMDs compiler to optimize, while they could have been vectorized without very much difficulty by the programmer.

Doesn't this go even further back than this? I mean didn't one of the companies optimize everything just so you could get a higher FPS rating on Quake or some other FPS game?

(yeah, I know that's vague, but it happened so long ago I really don't remember)

DX10 / Vista hype bursted its bubble. Schweet!

Indeed.

I would be so frustrated if 4 or 5 months ago I bought DX10 hardware and then Vista, only to have it become more and more obsolete without having played one single DX10 title.

Man I am glad I decided to wait!! :D

Almost NEVER worth it to jump on new tech at first offering, IMHO.
My next computer will be running Vista, but it'll take me several months to a year to save up the money to make it. I think I should be good by then. ^_^

Except the 8 series is also the best DX9 hardware out there so its not a waste at all.

i beleive, could be wrong, NVIDIA originally did not join the MS developer kit thing for DX10, but ATI was on board from the start, one reason why NVIDIA didnt mention about doing the unified shader work for so long, then bam, came out with the unified shader crap.
