Hi, this is my first post here @ [H]ardOCP. :)

Well, good things come, and so do bad.... :twisted:

yea, so on with why you clicked this thread...

I got my IHS off my P4.....dot dot dot......

Now, let me explain...

I first built my system, then overclocked.... all the same CPU... I go into my closet and find my hardware box, and it had another P4 in it,... no idea how it got there...

I tested the "new" p4, it was busted.. So I operated, as seen in the 2nd pic, left side processor. The core was fused onto the IHS. BUT, not so with this chip.

Busted chip was a Puerto Rican made chip, the working chip is a Malay.

Temps are now 4c cooler than before. Using an SP-94 HS with a 32CFM 80mm fan.

I idle @ about 38-39c and full load is 55c compared to 43-61.

One question about this... Why is the puerto rico chip's core 2x as big as the maylasian(sp?) core?

So lemme get this straight, you popped off the ihs... and your temps were cooler?
 
4c cooler, yes

and its only the early processors, not newer ones, the newer ones have their cores fused onto the IHS... Like what happened to my broken processor.
 
the maylay chips have a smaller core because supposedly the puerto rican chips are actually a crippled EE chip.... This is the word around the campfire not sure if it is true though it is just speculation.....
 
the bottom of the chip had the whole thing covered with the little chips just like the EE...

whatever, its broken...

back onto the IHS removal :)


o yea, I didnt say how much this was overclocked...

2.4GHz to 3.63GHz and still going :D
 
both northwoods?

ok, M0 stepping northwoods are actually binned Extreme Edition cores

All other stepping northwoods (B0, C1, D1) are just what you have on the right there, but it has become known that intel glues the IHS to all the cpus now, northwood, prescott, and alike.
 
yes, the larger core chip has M0 stepping.

when did intel start gluing them on? and what possessed them to do that?

they could save X amount of $$$ if then didnt put them on in the first place, then, lower temps, allowing higher clock speeds by a tiny bit.

Now the new LGA processor wont work without the IHS because it locks down by the IHS...
 
ihs is there to keep ppl from crushing the core... sort of like adding bubble wrap

when i think of direct die cooling i think of the heat exchange to occur directly through the die (which i guess if you wanted to play semantics then this could count too). I think watercooling directly on the die or phase change directly on the die. Not a threadcrap though. I think removing the IHS is awesome. Nice lap, too.
 
well, actually, the lapping sucked, it was only 200grit... lol

but yea, im getting water cooling after I get a new case and memory... or maybe I should get a new case, then watercooling, then memory, and then push it further, eh, whatever...
