Dilemma: Save or Future Proofing

I am in quite a dilemma, which is probably everyone's problem:

1) Do I buy the most expensive to stay with current for 3 years (BFG 6800GT)
2) Do I settle for mediocre and stay current for 1-2 years (BFG 6600GT)
3) Do I just SAVE and get something that should work (BFG FX5500 OC)

What I Do:
Games: I love RTS Games, such as Worldcraft, RON, LOTR, etc. I would really like to take stab at FPS, but always get dizzy after 10 minutes or so.
Photo/Video Editing: Occasional photo and video editing, mainly Pinnancle Software.

I am going to upgrade to a Dell 2005FPW next week as well, so I need you experience if I should go for 1, 2 or 3?

Woah, is that ti4200 dead? If you just bought the 5500 to "upgrade" you be going a step down from the ti4200. And yes, a 6800gt will smoke all those cards that you mentioned.
 
As far a graphics boards are concerned I buy the best available and keep it till a better one comes along. I will have no problem buying a next gen graphics card and selling off my overclocked X800 XT PE.
 
Seems Best Buy Online, the 6800GT is sold out, but two stores in NYC carry it, so it says under store availability. anyone know how accurate that is?
 
No such thing as future proofing. There will always be something better around the corner. Get something now instead of playing the waiting game.
 
Get the 6800GT, if you are getting a 2005FPW. Any of the other cards will crawl with virtually any new game in the native res.
 
What if I get the BFG 6800OC, would that still perform well on the 2005FPW?
 
6800gt is still the "sweet spot" for price vs. performance. A 6600gt won't be that far behind.
 
Any card on the market won't last 3 years. But yeah, a 6800GT is a good choice. I just ordered one myself.
