hi guys im new to this forum.....

i have a slight concern and dont know if its a small problem or not.... :)

i have the logitech Z-5500 speakers connected to my audigy 2 NX external soundcard. whenever i connect the speakers with an optical connection to my external soundcard and switch the sound card to "digital output" using the given program, it wont let me select 5.1. instead, its stuck on "2 speakers".

is this normal or is there a setting that must be set on my speakers or soundcard OR computer??? please help

thanks, :)

What is your sound source? Most audio is only 2 channel (pretty much movies and DVD-Audio and SACD are the only multichannel sources), and very few soundcards (audigy is not one of them) can encode on-the-fly DTS or Dobly Digital which is what is need to send multichannel audio from games over a digital audio connection. Also note that DVD-Audio and SACD do NOT allow the transmission of there unmodified signal over spdif.

It's normal.

The sound card may be able to "pass through" a Dolby Digital or DTS signal, and that would be a setting on the sound card software (and possibly the DVD playback software).

With games you are stuck with stereo. If you want surround sound for gaming, stick with the analog connections.

~Hope this helps

DRM that is why. Isn't it just great

The only way I know that you can send DVD-Audio over digital is with Denon-Link which is propietary (i have denon gear so I do not mind). So you have to have both a Denon reciever that supports Denon-Link and a DVD-A player that supports Denon-Link. it now also supports SACD, however that took forever because Sony is well Sony. Bottom line though the only reason Denon is allowed to do this is they where able to either sufficeintly prove to Sony and (who does DVD-A) that they could prevent illegal digital copies. (or the just paid boatloads of money ;) ).

edit: there is NO techinical reason why DVD-A and SACD can not be sent over spdif.
