Digital Doc questions

I'm looking at the Digital Doc fan controller for my system, but had some questions. I've found the older ones on eBay for $29.99, but they have the amber screen and fan (instead of the blue screen and USB/1394 ports). Is there a way to change the screen to a different color? If so, does anyone know where I can get one (preferrably blue)? I really don't care about (or need) the USB/1394 ports, otherwise I'd just buy the newer one with the blue screen. Also, is the 40mm fan in the front one of the 8 that the Digital Doc controls? If so, is there a way I can disconnect it from the controller, and use it normally?

I had one of the first ones, several years back. They look good in pictures, but they're pretty cheesey. Above all do not get ones with built in 40mm fans; the fans will start to die within a year, and they're noisy to begin with and provide almost no cooling. Unless one of these matches your case color exactly (or you're willing to paint/dye/MonoKote it so that it does), it will look like cheese. If you really want a fan controller, better ones exist from other vendors.

yes and yes you can disconnect it as it doe not move enought air to make any differenece in anything.

No easy or cost effective way to change the color.

I got one sitting here on my desk. Its great for monitoring temps HOWEVER, there is no lag in the temp setting for the fans. My issue with the thing (and many others reported as well) is that you constanly get fans cutting on then off on then off on then off if your fans are doing a decent job.

That is to say, if your fans are properly installed and do a good job the fan is off to start as the machine is booted and when the machine comes up to temp, the fan cuts on, quckly cools the case, goes off, and if gaming or machine under load the temp rapidly comes back up and the fan cuts on again, runs for 5-10 seconds then cuts off, annoying as hell. Ripped it out. setting fans to differnet temp trip points helps some but does not solve the problem.

If you could also adust fan speed/voltage or set individual ON temp and OFF temp the thing would be the greatest. If your fans are 7V or very quiet it might not be as annoying. Your milage may vary.

I have a Digi Doc 5. I took out the amber leds and put in blue ones and also put in the polairzing film in now so it looks great.

I don't use it anymore and only used it for about a year.

I would sell it to you for $40 + shipping.

Thanks for the responses. Do you have any recommendations for other fan controllers, as an alternative to the Digital Doc? I looked at the Matrix Orbital, but it's a little more than I want to spend (looking for something in the > $60 range).

get the digidoc 5+ <----- notice the "+" it is blue, and has been tweaked, for instance, there is no longer the annoying instant fan speed changes wwparrish speaks of...and it cost $40 -$50 new, so i would never pay more then $25 for a used "non +" version.....
