I've noticed a lot of card will have different advantages at higher or lower resolutions. The more and more I read, the more I can't choose which is better: ATI or Nvidia. I'd be running at 1920x1200 with max settings, and playing games like L4D, Call of Duty, and Demigod. Maybe someone can finally give me a hard enough push in one direction that I'll be able to decide.

I've been looking at gtx260 SLI, HD4890, and gtx285.
Does SLI favor different mobos?

Besides more power and heat, whats downsides are there to SLI? Same question for crossfire.

All of those games will run fine at 1920X1200 with max settings on a single GTX 260. You would get a boost (unnoticeable in the games you listed) by going with a 4890, GTX 285, or GTX 260 SLI configuration. I would go with a single GTX 260 or HD 4890 now and upgrade to something twice as fast in 18-24 months time when all of the cards you listed will start to show their age in some of the newer games.

im using a 4850 right now and im running 1920x1200 on every game i play fine right now. not the most demanding games though. i might double up with crossfire once sc2 comes out and ill be good to go for another year

Just upgraded my GTX 260 to a GTX 285 and I haven't noticed any difference. I hope to see some benefit in some of the new games coming out that I will be playing but that is yet to be seen! One single GTX 285 is enough for me at 1920x1200 and even my old GTX 260 192 was enough honestly. IMO, If you have the money go for the GTX 285, if not, find the best deal on 260 or 4890. Good luck on your choice!

With the prices of GTX 260 216s today, SLI'ing them isn't a bad proposition provided you have adequate case space, motherboard slots, and power supply to boot.

If it's at all possible, I always recommend going with a single GPU over any kind of multi-GPU set-up. It's not that I haven't been happy with SLI, but a single card is smoother, cooler, and much more efficient. I would recommend looking into either an ATI 4890 or GTX 260+ 216 as both are really good overclockers. You could also look at a GTX 285, but I think it's not worth it from a price/performance perspective.

Seems to me like the 4890 is on par with the gtx 285 for ~130 dollars less. So what reason do I have to not get the 4890? Even overclocking the 4890.

Been looking at this article @1920x1200:

Is anandtech biased? I noticed a lot of the comments on the article leans in that direction.

Overclocked it certainly is comparable, even better in some games. The GTX 275 is also an option at that price range if you prefer the green team for whatever reason.
