Difference in Ide cables.

If I have a 40 wire ide cable will my data transfer speeds suffer if I use just one drive per channel? I didn't realise till recently there was a difference between cables. thanks. what if i use the 40 wire cables for optical drives will there be a decrease in speed switching from the 80 wire cables?

edit: and why are there 80 wire cables when the ide hard drives have only 39 pins? thanks :D
 
Half the wires in the 80 pin are used to minimise atenuation and cross talk between the live wires.
 
oh ok I was just wondering. because I have some spare 40 wire cables and didn't know if I could still use them. I think ill just find another 80 wire one so i get faster speeds.
 
Actually, the 80-wire cable may make a difference in the newest DVD burners. Burning or reading DVDs at 16x will come very close to the maximum practical (sustainable) bandwidth of Ultra ATA/33 (which will be the fastest ATA mode that is usable with older 40-wire cables). Some of the newest burners may drop the maximum allowable burning speed to 8x if the nominally Ultra ATA/66 16x DVD burner drops its interface speed to Ultra ATA/33 due to the outdated IDE cable.

Hard drive physical transfer rates have already exceeded the maximum practical bandwidth of Ultra ATA/33 since the advent of 20GB/platter (read: 20GB per platter) designs. Today, 133GB/platter designs are state of the art, and 80 to 100 GB/platter designs are typical. Today's hard drives are just now beginning to exceed the maximum practical bandwidth of Ultra ATA/66, as far as physical transfer rates are concerned.

A 16x dvd burner only transfers data at a maximum of 24 MB/s. If a 33 MB/s cable can only send 24 or less, something is seriously wrong with your wiring; that's only 72% efficiency. Time to look into shielded cables. ;)

It's not the wiring; it's the controller hardware. And when I said "very close," no matter which cables I used (shielded or unshielded) in Ultra ATA/33 mode, the maximum practical bandwidth of ATA/33 is really about 29 MB/s. (The firmware in some 16x DVD burners thinks that's too close for comfort - and downgrades their maximum allowable burning speed accordingly.) No controller chipset can sustain the maximum burst bandwidth for any given mode.
