Difference between old and new generation displays

I'm thinking about upgrading my display from a 22" Samsung 225BW (three years old) and am curious to know what improvements I could expect if I got a new display with the same size and resolution (1280 x 1050)

I'd go with something larger / more res, but I can't buy a wide gamut display so there aren't a lot of choices for me.

Either way, I'd like to get an idea from others who might have made the same transition... The most important thing to me is ease on the eyes and text sharpness, etc.

Thanks

Heh, heh. I think there is actuallt nothing really new. Maybe eIPS, which is a cheaper version of IPS. And a flood of wide gamut monitors with ridiculous sRGB "emulations" and of course 16:9 monitors :-/
So unless you want to spend a lot for an advanced 24"+ IPS model, you may as well stay with your current monitor.

I just asked basically the same question you did and have the same monitor you have now.

I just need something with sharper text.

The new 22" DELL e-IPS is gaining lots of attention here, and is worth a look for its price.

Let us know who your upgrade goes.

If you are not watching a lot of movies, I don't see the point on the new 16:9 models. Unless its bigger than your 22"

Awesome, so at least I know it's just not me that thinks text on this monitor sucks. Or at least, I *hope* it sucks and that there are monitors with much better text out there.

My main criteria is 1980x1200 just because I'd like the higher resolution when necessary, and to sorta future-proof. But I don't want wide gamut, and would rather stick with 16:10 also. So I'm not finding a lot and will probably have to compromise somewhere. Let me know if you find anything... I'll let you know if I choose one.

NCIXUS has the BenQ G2400WD on sale for $251 + shipping. Damn cheap if you ask me. If you need to have IPS then I would go for the 2209WA as Cliff recommended, of course you would be sacrificing resolution for a higher quality panel but you would be keeping the low price of a TN.

Yeps. That BenQ is awfully tempting. Comes out to about $290 with shipping and insurance. Still an incredible deal.

I bought the BenQ on NCIXUS! Thanks a ton guys! This is actually the monitor I was going to buy 8 months ago from newegg... they had it on sale for about $250 and the sale ended 2 hours before I decided on this model... so never ended up buying a monitor until now. I spent the entire day Sunday comparing all sizes / models of screens and ended up with this one.

Reason: 24", good value, 1920x1200 resolution, 1:1 pixel mapping. supposedly good text, good for TN display, low lag / ghosting, good for games, good inputs, standard color gamut (I'm on osx which would suck with wide gamut).

If it wasnt for the wide gamut on the new IPS hp 2407, i woulda got it.

please report back on the quality of the text....and if its better/same than the 22" Sammy.

Enjoy the monitor!

So I got my monitor yesterday...there was some delay because I forgot to click the final confirmation on their site, but otherwise shipping was good.

I don't really notice a different in text clarify between this an the Samsung. Though, everything in general on it is slightly more clear due to the smaller dot pitch. Also the colors are good and the display seems very bright compared to the Samsung... I think it's mostly the whites are whiter and the blacks are blacker.

It's a great monitor for the price, but I think that in order to fix my problem with text readability I'll need to set another eye doctor... my current doctor told me that my eyes are great, but there is significant blurring when I cover my right eye and sit a few feet from the screen.

This link has some great info regarding displays and distance: http://www.office-ergo.com/viewing.htm

Turns out I was sitting too close because of blurriness... the problem is that OSX doesn't have a way to universally increase font size across the whole OS.. it has to be done on an app basis. For this reason, if I sit the proper distance from the 24" screen, I can't read most text at all.

I imagine this is also true for other people and that they simply sit too close.

Anyway... great monitor. But if I had a choice, I would buy a high-end 22" (standard-gamut) that had 1920x1200 resolution and get a 20.1" 4:3 monitor to place on the side. Or if I had the money, I would just buy the 24" stand gamut NEC.

thanks for the feedback samssf.

after more research, it seems that text clarity really isn't much better with the BenQ, and as you have witnessed.

I'm thinking of going with a glossy LG 22" or an HP 24"

I'm going to stay with either one I mentioned until some IPS or LED display comes out next year.
