i posted a post here a few days ago inquiring on some drives info.i want to thank everyone who replied.in the end i have decided on the 250gb diamondmax 10 with 16mb cache.my question is,does anyone know how reliable this drive is? also,ive got a msi k8t neo-fsr mobo,will i run into any problems running this drive on this mobo.thanks.
 
The DM10 is Maxtor's finest consumer drive. I would expect it to be of quality construction and design, and be quite reliable under light to medium duty cycles typical of consumer use. For users who require drives for heavy I/O, 24/7 power on, and frequent R/W cycles, they make the MaxLineIII, but that is not going to show its better construction until you totally work the drive to death in the consumer environment or use it in the enterprise. All hard drives may fail unexpectedly, but your new DM10 should give years of service if you care for it properly with cooling, quality power, and keep it stationary. Also, i have not heard of unusual quality control issues with this series of drives.

You should not have any issues with installing it. There were some issues with Maxtor's NCQ drives and the NF4 Ultra/SLI, but they have all been fixed. Read up on how to slipstream SP2 into your XP install CD (if you haven't done it already) to be sure that your OS will recognize the full capacity of the drive, educate yourself on your system's BIOS settings for SATA, have the 'F6 drivers' disk handy, and you'll be good to go and installation will be a breeze.
 
thanks a ton doug,i feel much better about the choice i made on the maxtor.one small problem on streaming the sp2 into xp install.im running a backup maxtor thats only 10 gigs i believe with winxp pro on it,and i think ill have trouble freeing up enough space to do this,not to mention the drive is really slow at 5400rpm and 2 meg cache. can i install sp2 after i install winxp pro and still be fine as far as it reconizing the full capacity of the drive?
