i was wondering, i keep hearing people running games at 1280x960, but i thought that 1280x1024 was the resolution that didn't have distortion on it...cuz that's what i run my desktop at

are there differences in game resolution vs desktop resolution?

Um, widescreen mode? I'm not really sure. This is the first I've heard of it myself. That would be one wide screen, though. Unless they're doing a multi monitor setup.

As I understand it, the two resolutions can be indistinguishable on CRTs because the pixels don't have to be fixed aspect ratios themselves. Thus, one could have rectangular pixels at 1280 x 1024 and it would look almost identical to a 1280 x 960 resolution with square pixels.

Interesting. I wonder if that would work on an LCD (although, I doubt it will).

I'd hook my main box up to my CRT, but it really sucks doing multi monitor with an LCD and a CRT. The CRT will be locked at 60fps, which blows. Or the LCD will run at a higher refresh rate, unless it's on DVI (as mine is). My second box has a MX200 so it's definatly not getting up that high. :p

I can see how that works, though.

I always thought it was really stupid that games (XIII and BF1942) go to a resolution of 1280 x 960. WTF is that? My 1800FP has a native resolution of 1280 x 1024. It looked fine on my screen, so I left it that way for a while....but I ended up dropping it to 1024 x 768 and turning on a bunch of AA features. The 1800 FPs can rescale the screen size pretty well....much better than other LCDs I have seen.
