Desk Server Idea, i've been designing this L shape desk, after much trial and error, not to mention measurements, i've devised a legible desk idea, with a little wood work and time would not be such a bad idea. . . and using sketchup and a measuring tape i've been able to measure out the right size, so all i would have to do to get it built is measure out all the wood pieces individually and have it cut out for me, then just some simple assembly.

specifically though on the right unit hutch on the right side i devised a compartment to hold all the hard disks for my upcoming server. I havent come up with how to mount the drives yet, but i will most likely use an existing system and mount that into the compartment. Also havent put it places for fans, but will use a multitude of 120mm fans on the back and on top, which are slow moving, but provide similiar cooling to 80mms at higher speeds but with less noise.

Once I move out and have room for this 6 1/2 square foot desk, i might turn this into a worklog, but for now its simply in the planning phases. . so i guess im just looking for feedback and suggestions.
 
Two things I notice with your design.
1. That corner section is going to need some bracing. The work surface will not hold up very well without it.
2. You want to avoid large flat areas touching the ground such as in the left section hold the CPU. 2 reasons to avoid this, biggest is floors are NEVER level and so you will have a pain getting the desk not to rock. Second moisture, it will get trapped between the floor and desk and this is not good for wood. This can be easily fixed in your design by just adding adjustable metal feet. Which even without the large flat areas I would get adjustable metal feet anyhow.

As for where you want to put your server. I would personally not put it there, it is going to be loud and even louder sitting at ear level.
 
I agree with all that. long lines on the floor point out irregularities in the wood and your floor. also makes more of an impression on your flooring. adjustable feet are cheap and easy.

the server by your head will be loud and hot.

No drawers? at least open shelves to simplify construction. I never thought drawers or shelves were important until I had to use a table as a desk temporarily. frekin sucks not having something to store misc crap.
 
Suggestion for drawers. If it is your first wood project, AVOID drawers. They are hard to do right, and if done wrong are pretty much useless. In fact when looking at furniture the easiest way to tell if it is well built is to look at how the drawers are constructed.

So to avoid building drawers yet still have some, buy one of the many drawers on wheels type thing that is designed to roll under a desk or next to it.
 
yea that's a couple of things i havent added,
1. the left unit will have a door on the left enclosure
2. i was thinking of adding drawers to the right unit on the left side of the hutch, but it wasn't set in stone
3. i was going to add feet to everything, and this is the exploded version, so the three units would be set together, but it hadn't figured out how to brace the corner section yet.

- just added two shelves to the unit on the left, this is designed to be much like my current desk, but with some changes and obviously doubling the workspace by using two, and adding the center unit. I might take out the lower shelf on the left unit, it's supposed to be a leg rest, but as i dont want to increase pressure on this any more as i plan to . .ill just take it out.

new setup. . still working on orientation of the internals for the server, but happy with the overhaul on the server setup, now below the waist line, and with the hard drives at the bottom should produce less noise

server is now on a slideout tray, and i made a hole for the I/O, so when working on the mobo all i have to do is unplug the I/O connections (monitor,keyboard,mouse, ethernet,etc), and slide out the compute. The Sata cables won't be a problem because i plan on using 3 ft cables so unless i get to the point where the hard drives go all the way down, the cables shouldn't be a problem. As for the mounts I might use some of those modules were you can store them internally and each unit has it's own fan, any idea how the noise is on those?
