demystify AMD based ESXi device passthrough

What are the CPU and motherboard requirements that I need to be looking for to support device passthough on ESXi?

I would prefer and opteron based solution if possible, but I just can't find much info on the requirements. I am looking to upgrade my home lab and I need a board that supports 64GB+ of memory and 2-4 processors. an opteron solution can be had pretty cheap on ebay that supports the processing power and ram I need, I just don't want to buy parts that I can't use passthough on.
 
I am using a supermicro x9srl-f, which is socket 2011 and have 2 cards using pcie passthrough. i would assume that most of supermicro that are on the higher end of the spectrum would support it. I recommend board that has the -f suffix for remote kvm to the box through a dedicated nic on the back.
